Also I need to get a spare key made, does it have a chip in it?

Here is the procedure:

  1. Enter your Ford vehicle and close the door.
  2. Slide the ignition key attached to the Ford key fob into the ignition.
  3. Turn the key on and off eight times (do not start the car), leaving the key in the "On" position after the eighth turn. ...
  4. Press one of the key fob buttons within 20 seconds to program the key fob.

You can get a locksmith to program/cut a key for about $50. Once you have two working keys you can program other keys. I always keep more than three keys to ensure I can program more if one stops working or gets lost. You can have the keys cut at a hardware store. To program keys:

Insert the key you want to program into the ignition cylinder within 20 seconds of removing the last key. Turn the key to the "On" position for at least three (but no longer than 10) seconds. Turn the key to the "Off" position and remove it. Re-insert the key and try to crank the engine.

How common is it that a key stops working? I only have one.

I have never had one stop working. My biggest concern is losing one.

Oh ok. I was worried so i itopped at lowes and they want $75 plus tax for an aftermarket key. So i just ordered a blank one on amazon, do you know if a normal locksmith would "work with it"?

I paid a local mobile locksmith around $50 and they came to my driveway to do it. They also provided and cut the key for that price. He would not use the key I provided but for the price I didn't mind. Once you have two working keys then you can program a third, fourth etc.

I ordered a pack of keys on Amazon. Home Depot cut them for free, and since I had two keys i programmed them myself. For the remote do what @94Eddie said - many tutorials online. Good luck!

One thing I forgot to mention is you will need to program all your fobs at once. Even ones that have been previously programmed. It took a while for me to figure out that programming them one at a time would only result in the last fob programmed being useful. The previous ones no longer worked. To program them all at once just press the button on the fobs one after the other during step four. You don't cycle through steps 1-4 for each fob because doing so negates the programming of the previous fobs.

I got 2 fobs from Amazon and programmed them. All is good

I have an 04 Explorer Limited & my husband has an 02 F150 King Ranch. Both of our keys stopped working at different times. I only had the 1 key so I was without my Explorer for about 2 months. I decided to throw one last hail mary effort to get it started the day before I was going to have it hauled off. I found an uncut key taped to the steering column. The tape was just starting to unravel enough that the key was no longer out of site. We had spent MANY hours under the steering wheel in those 2 months & never saw that key until then. We took it to lowes & had it cut to match my then non working key, & it started right up. Anyway, 2/2 malfunctioned on us. Make sure to keep other chipped keys away from yours. In all the research I had done, I determined that's probably what happened to mine.

Can you "program" a new chipped key if you only have one functioning key left?

No. You need two functioning keys to make a third one. This makes sense otherwise a person parking your car, working on it etc. could easily make a copy for themselves. Although they could program a fob so I guess they could rob your car but not steal it.
