Didn't some 1994 (1st Gen) Limiteds come with keypad entry? Not sure about that.
Anyway, if you retrofitted it, it can be done, with enough $$$$ and work. You'd probably have to get some sort of GEM computer module or something like that, but then I'm no expert on that kind of stuff.
If you ask me, It's a waist of time and money. Just go to your local tuner shop and have them put in a keyless intery for about $150 or so. The amount of work involved with those keypads are crazy. putting the keypad in the door is the easy part. The hard part would be the wiring to run the computer for it. You would have more than a grand in labor. It's just not worth the trouble.
If you already have keyless entry via a key fob, its really easy. There are kits out there that use double sided tape to attach a keypad to your door. You then progran the key pad into your car like its another key fob. Set up an access code, and voila, your set.
Only problem is I cannot remember where I saw these sold at.
If you dont have keyless entry with the key fob, then thats not too difficult either as long as you have power locks.
If you dont have power locks, then your looking at a lot of work. If I recall correctly though, all explorers have power locks.
Awhile ago I checking out Ford's website and came across a special for a keyless entry keypad to be installed for like $100, but I never got around to see if this could be added to my 92 X. You may want to call some dealers or independent shops and see if these could be added.
The keypad is only available on 95+ the GEM on first gen's has no way to support a keypad. Just about every explorer sold had power windows and power door locks the largest expection being fleet vehicles. Though I'm sure there are a few running around out there that don't have either as well.

You are correct in that the wired key pad wasn't available until '95. However, if the pre-95s were equipped with the remote entry (the key-fob transmitter) it's possible that the new stick-on keypads may be compatible. The stick on the side of the door with double-sided tape, and they work with the existing system just like another remote for the doors. They are battery-operated just like the existing remotes. Enter the 5-digit code on the keypad and it emits a signal just like the remote on the key-chain.
Note that it will only work on vehicles that already have the remote entry. I'm not sure if any of the first-gens had it or not.
