Keys and Remote Control PIU 2015

Hello All,

New guy here. I have a 2015 PIU which was not used as a police car. It was a municipal car with full regular Explorer interior. It's a very nice vehicle, only 40,000 miles.

I have a blade key and the three button (lock/unlock/horn) remote. I would like to add a second remote. Unfortunately, the "8-ignition turn on" routine doesn't seem to work for programming a second remote.

The car appears to be in "dark mode" in that the interior lights and dash don't come on when the door is opened...only once the blade key is inserted and the ignition is turned on does the dash activate and interior lights come on. Similarly, the parking lights (nor the horn sound) do not actuate when the remote button is pressed to lock/unlock the vehicle.

I have two questions:

1. I have heard that it's not possible to program a second remote when the PIU is in "dark mode." No idea if that's true or not. Anyone know?
2. Is it possible to program a second remote for this vehicle under the current conditions without using Forscan?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you. I appreciate the welcome here. I've been a Ford guy for a long time - had a south African CAV gt40 replica for many years and now have a Lotus Esprit with a 347 stroker transplant.

I had a crown vic interceptor after high school and loved it. So when my twin 16yo daughters got their drivers license recently I thought why not an explorer PIU? They love it. But I need a second remote...

I had to take mine out of Dark Mode (W/Forscan) to Program my RKEs, I also have a '15 PIU. I have Remote Start and a couple long RKEs, all buttons work even when put back into dark mode, except trunk since there's no Electronic Liftgate Shocks on mine. Also needed Hood Switch for Remote Start. These cheaper RKEs get about a 50 Foot 'unobstructed' Range.
