I have a 5.0 V8 engine. Can anyone tell me does the KKM Air Filter kit improve the gas mileage any? I have looked at the K&N filter kit and with the cost it would really have to improve the gas mileage. The KKM is around $100.00, which would not be to bad if it increases fuel mileage.

An open filter can improve gas mileage depending on driving style.

I would recommending going with a K & N, MAC or Volant over the KKM.

Good luck ....

Yes, and plan for a best quality filter replacement later. Those air cleaners do not come with the best filters. I think Amsoil had some good comparisons on their website. Good luck,

hahahah, "driving style" being the key phrase, i was gettin 15-16 mpg, as soon as i got my volant, it probably droped to about 10 :burnout: You cant help but get into it a little more. :D

Air Filter

What if you had one one these adapters that bolt on the old system and purchase an Amsoil air filter. Is there something more in the inlet tube that just a good filter?

technically the aftermarket inlet tubes are "smoother" on the inside, and "allow for beter, less restrictive airflow". Now I dont know if any of that is really true, but i definately like the look over stock.

The best bang for the buck is a MAC Intake with an Amsoil filter. That is the setup that I run.

I think the biggest benefit is the better flowing air filter with a smooth intake tube. The factory rubber tube has ribs inside, I can only assume that the ribs disrupt air flow, negatively.

I am going to construct my own "kit" Monday from some universal intake tubing. I have a K&N filter already, but suspect that I can build it from universal parts and have less $$ in it than a MAC. If you are interested, I can give you some details after I get it completed. Otherwise, I'd say a MAC is the best bet.

I am interested in seeing what you come up with. I am in no hurry I am just looking for what will work and maybe help gas mileage.

Nice Job! :biggthump

Looks good...so did it help your gas mileage yet? I also have the 5.0 and would interested in doing something similiar...

No gas mileage results yet- just installed it yesterday.

I took the tube apart, primed and painted it.

The inside- the 4" adapter is too big for the MAF, the 3" adapter is too small. I used the 4" (obviously), instead of leaving a "step" I painstakingly cut down a section of a funnel to smooth the transition, then siliconed it in to make a good seal.

The filter is huge!

I'd estimate it would be difficult to build one of these on your own and come out ahead of buying a KKM. I'll break down the costs of the parts I know how much- These are prices at my local AutoZone-

3 Couplers @ $6.99 = $20.97

Filter $38.99

MAF Adapter $11.99

The 3" intake tubes are $40-$60

So, it'd take $111.95- $130.95, depending on what tube you get. For that much, I'd take the KKM.

I have a friend that gave me the tube and couplers, so my cost is ~$66 :)

So from what I'm hearing from the forum is MAC over KKms? I have a 2000 EB AWD 5.0LV8 and I'm in the market for a air intake kit.
