Brian, I have a larger TB and the KKM. You should get the KKM. As for the TB, I haven't noticed any improvement in power or gas mileage, but throttle response is better. If that's worth several hundred bucks to you, then get it.
I think the KKM filter package is not certified and might not pass the visual air emission inspection here in Houston.
Am in the process of checking out the K&M...If the package is not approved, guess I will get the K&M drop-in filter.
I would say get it no matter where you live and swap the old box back in when you need to do inspections. It's well worth it once you see what your truck breathes through normally. At least on the older Explorers. The hole that it sucks air into is about 3 or so square inches. Look behind your grill to check out that little thing in there. I have ripped off that part that keeps air going directly into mine and I got the KKM. Well worth the investment. I noticed more power right away. If you just wanna do the K&N drop in you will have to do like Gerald did and put a few holes in your box. In either case they are both better than the paper filter. I just know that the KKM is better than just a K&N. Check out Rick's write-up. It details it very well. I will say the one thing I thought was silly about the whole thing was the brackets that came with the KKM to hold it up. They are difficult to get in there just right and the bolts they provide are not the right length to bolt them into the fender. Other than that I can say I love that setup. That and doing the flowie exhaust was the best thing I have done so far performance wise.
Just fixed some spelling and grammar errors. Remember you're on the list.
1994 Explorer,Borla headers/exhaust,KKM filter,4 in. Superlift.
The KKM definitely gives more bang than the K+N filter, but you have the hassle of swapping the old box in and out for inspection every year. Most states, including mine will not inspect a car without the stock box.
Thanks for all the imput! I dont have to worry about emisions inspections because I am registered in a ruel town! Bonus! I was wondering though if it improves gas milage on both? I want to get better milage than 13 mpg! I have the k&n and I like it but I want BETTER! Also about the big bore i need better gas milage because I commute alot. Any sugestions of what I can do for a solution.?
I also commute a lot, and I have not done the actual calculations, but I think the KKM does improve gas mileage.
I got better mileage when I added a power chip and Borla exhaust system. I will compare the box + drop-in filter to the KKM and get back with you. My only other problem with the KKM is the difficulty with installation. The bolts and brackets that come with the KKM are almost worthless. The space is very tight, especially in the pre-1995 model explorer and I had to fabricate my own apparatus to hold it in place. It still only takes 45min -1 hr to install.
What chip did you put in or what chip do you recomend for gas milage improvement? I have read a bit about them on this site but am still unsure what the general consensus is.
I added the KKM filter set-up at the same time as a hypertech chip to my 94 xlt 4wd and it made a world of difference in pick-up and power. Worth every penny! It was a real dog before the mods. Much better now, plus I added a flowmaster cat-back exhaust; not too sure if the exhaust added much, but couldn't hurt.
Even just KKM alone makes a world of difference. I had this set-up for a while and don't even remember if I done the emissions test before or after the instalation. In Illinois we do it every two years.
Intalation was not that easy. I got it right though with my own brackets designed on the spot. Works.
I've had NO problems with my KKM on a 94 Navajo. Throttle response is noticeably improved. I'm sure gas mileage would be better too if I could keep my foot out of it. I did have to get a little creative with the installation but it all worked out great. Two thumbs up...
I'm not real sure what all the install problems are, unless the kit has been changed since I put in mine. I got one about 3 years ago, and it was a breeze to install. I pulled the whole airbox, all the lines and tubes to it, etc. And was still done in less than 30 minutes. And I've never had a problem with it. Other than the headers, it is the best mod I've done to date.
The KKM kit I received didn't have any bracket to really position the filter, so a local made me an L bracket and now it's held up properly and working well.
Definitely worth a $bill for the performance boost.
