KKM and pinging

Byrd91
You say it does not ping for the first few minutes of a trip. Hmmmmmm, maybe something in your engine is heating up too much. What is the situation regarding your radiator, water pump, and thermostat arrangement - perhaps your engine is getting hot? And if you think the KKM is allowing too much air to enter the manifold, you could block off or restrict the airflow some (wrap a cloth, rag, aluminum foil, etc. around part of the KKM filter to restrict air flow) and if the ping goes away you know it is related to the air flow. And there is the oxygen sensor in your exhaust system. Maybe this O2 sensor (upstream of the "cat") arrangement got screwed up when the Flowmaster catback exhaust system was installed - the air/fuel flow rate ratio is set using this O2 sensor signal and if the computer is somehow giving a too high air/fuel flow rate ratio (lean setting) it is (I think) more prone to ping. I have a KKM induction arrangement on my 91 XLT Explorer 4x4 and no ping (but it does not get very hot in Western Washington). Keep us posted on what happens. Mike in Seattle

The radiator, water pump, and thermostat are brand new, so is the 02 sensor (is there more than one). Also the fuel pressure regulator is new. I might try restricting the flow because its easy to do, the other thing I want to do is change the fuel filter, and try putting the stock air box on to see if it is an air temperature thing. All of these ideas are great though, keep em coming.

If it still pings with the stock filter assembly check the air intake tube for cracks. Mine had cracks in the ribs where it goes to the MAF and where it makes the turn into the TB. The constant shaking, heat change and old age makes this part crack easily allowing air to enter the intake after the MAF, since this extra air isn't acounted for it can lean things out. Good luck.
