KKM Installation help !!!!

Hello, I have a 94 explorer . and am installing my KKM tru-rev induction system and was wondering do I HAVE to place the support brackets on and drill holes ?? or is this just if it is to heavy??? then if it seems to heavy , then use the brackets ??? PLEASE give advice !! THANK YOU !

The amount of space where the airbox once was seems to vary by year, model, and probably options. My KKM fits like a glove without the brackets and is in there solid. The brackets are a nice safety feature to keep the intake tube from rubbing on the alternator pulley or drive belt, but if you want, a zip tie or two will keep the tube from slipping back as well. The metal brackets also probably add a cleaner and more finished look for those who need them for this

If yours is snug and you can push it and the intake tube back without it rubbing anything, you're set!
 






I agree tith anime. Although I have a huge cavern in which my KKM sits. I could not get the nut seated on the bolt for the bracket well enough (too small of a gap in an access in the sill above the radiator), and I subsequently lost the bracket and the bolt through the aluminum fitting into the air filter. It has not been a problem yet (there still appears to be an adequate seal), and an e-mail to KKM was quickly answered back to me, letting me know what size bolts they are so I can pick up a replacement. If you have the room though; the bracket installed definately looks like a more professional job. Cheers, enjoy the gains.
 






:redexp: Ditto - use the supplied bracket if you need it and/or use some wire ties (color optional) to snug it/dress it all up.

You might want to consider a K&N DryCharger Wrap for your new KKN. The DryCharger is an elasticized overwrap that is water resistant - comes in different colors and doesn't really affect the airflow. Look for them at :

precleaner

Actually the K&N drywrap thing adds a 10% restriction to the airflow- says so in the K&N catalog. K&N also makes a "precleaner"- it adds a 2% restriction to the airflow. I run the precleaner.

The big difference between the two is the drywrap is just a bag that slips over the cone filter, and the precleaner is a puffy foam that uses filter oil to get the majority of the dirt before it hits the filter.

Either one should work like a charm and is great compared to running a bare filter and having to do all the work to clean it.
 






Mine is held up by the supports, however they are not screwed to anything. I also used zip ties to hold it up also.
 






My KKM just sits in there. It came with 2 brackets, one for each side, but I could secure 1 of the brackets on the base. And that one didn't last long.

I've got about 1/2" between the air tube and the alternator pulley. I watch it like a hawk to make sure it's not rubbing. I'd sure like a better solution than that rube-goldberg bracket KKM has. Twist ties won't work in my case. The ties would have to attach to the hood, to hold the tube up, and that's not too practical for opening the hood.
