alright anyone who has a KKM true rev system on there X, tell me somethin. do you notice better acceleration with it, and also do you get more HP/ Torque from it. and if theres another product like it for around $100. i want to know before i spend $100 if im gettin actual performnace, or something that just look pretty under the hood.

You get actual performance. Do a search of KKM and you will see hundreds of threads about the KKM. Mine has quicker acceleration and it just drives a heck of a lot better. It can breathe!! Best 100 bucks I ever spent!!

I only notice any performance gain at night.. during the day my mounty is slow as dirt.. overall, the kkm makes exhaust sound better by day, and gives you performance by night heh... although theres no signifigant gain from what I see, I'd say overall its worth it

The biggest difference you will notice is the sound of your engine. As far as performance if you took your car to the 1/4 mile and ran it with a KKM and with a stock airbox i bet it wouldnt even be a 1 second difference. Everyone says they can feel the power but #'s is what matters. The only difference i had was the sound.

Boosts performance in all conditions. My mileage increased also. Best bang for your bucks.

yeh its definantly worth the money. when its cool out you can feel a little bit of a difference but it makes your engine sound mean as hell at WOT

There aren't any single bolt-ons short of a supercharger that will improve your 1/4 mile times by a second. Most people start feeling the difference at about .2-.3 seconds. Some can feel .1 or less. With the mods I have done, I am hoping that I got .4-.5 total. It would be nice to improve upon my stock 16.374 1/4 mile time by a second though. That would make my Explorer quicker than a mid-90's Mustang GT automatic.

When I put a cat-back system on m '94 4.0L Ranger, all it gained me was .25 seconds. Since I could feel the difference, I thought I picked up a lot more than a quarter of a second. I called up the shop that I bought it from to complain and they told me that .25 was about right for just a cat-back system.

I never said that i didnt like the KKM. I love the sound it brought to my motor and i think it is a good product. I was just simply saying that if your going to buy it simply for performance unless your going to run your car at a drag strip on the weekends ... those .2 seconds arent going to make any difference at all in your everyday driving. Buy it becuase it is easy to clean. Buy it becuase it will last. Buy it becuase you want your engine to sound louder. But dont buy it becuase your expecting a huge performance increase because you will be kidding yourself. I have no reason to lie. Thats like me saying that my trucks arodynamics were changed after i took off my wiper arms and i noticed my truck was quicker at highway speeds. It wont happen. Trust me on this one.

i agree with 99X
dont buy it thinking its going to drive like a mustang.

its already paid for itself in air filter savings for me. thats close to 3 years of use and over 90k miles. based on the whole air filter change at every oil change (i figure 17 filters at $6 and its close.)
i got mileage and performance increase. some people have biult or bought cool air intake to help performance during the heat of the day. do a search for "cold air intake" or similar.

its not a hype thing it really works.

It all comes down to how much money you have and what kind of performance gains you are expecting for your $. If you are expecting Mustang GT performance after just installing an air-filter, then yes you will be sadly disappointed. I am happy with the performance gain that I got out of my FIPK, But then again, my performance expectations were realistic. I wasn't expecting anything huge, just noticeable. Noticeable it is, huge it is not ( FIPK:) )

yeh i can definantly feel a difference in acceleration. but its not like i feel like i have a V8 now. hell maybe if my X was running good i would feel it more.. *glares at my X*

.... YOUR A SPONGE!!!

(talking to my X)

FIPK on a SOHC?

Robert, how did you get the K&N FIPK to work on your SOHC? I have an '01 X SOHC and want to install an intake, but the market hasn't come up with much besides the KKM. I guess Volant is working on something, but there is nothing but promises yet.

I got better throttle response throughout the power band and especially low end. THe KKM is the BEST bang for your buck.

It fit without any modifications. I ordered it through Performance Products 6/00 when they had a 15% off coupon. They don't list it for a '98 and up though but I am certain that someone here with a '98 has put one on thier SOHC. After sending them pictures of my stock intake they saw that their '98 looked exactly like my '97. If I remember correctly when I ordered it, I though there was a note at the bottom that said something like "for all 4.0L except round cone type factory air-boxes". Since mine was technically a 4.0L and I had the square box I ordered it. It fit like it was made for it so I assume that it was. Maybe K&N never tested it on later versions of the SOHC or maybe Ford changed the MAF sensor shape. Send me a reminder with your e-mail address and I'll send you some pictures of mine for you to compare to. It is supposed to cool down this weekend to the lower 100s and since it is time to service my filter I could get some pictures of it in various stages of assembly. Depending on Performance Products return policy, you might want to try ordering one for a '97 SOHC by going to the following link: Dead Link Removed As long as they will take it back if it doesn't work I would try it. They are running another 15% off sale through September 20 so you should be able to get it for less than $150.

This just proves the KKM is a better deal. You can get the FIPK for $200 or the KKM for $100. You get the same performance for less.

What you just described is a standard K&N filter, not the FIPK.

This is FIPK:

What you just described is the K&N FIPK Generation II which isn't available for the Explorer and won't be until later this fall. The standard K&N filter would go into my standard air-box:

The mounting brackets for my FIPK look like:
