ok, I see what you have now. You described something different.

FIPK this fall?

Did I read correctly that K&N will be releasing a FIPK for the SOHC engine later this fall? How did you get this info? I visited the K&N site and saw no new info.

They already have a K&N FIPK for my '97 SOHC (I have one). I have read of a couple of people with newer models putting the '97 on theirs. Look at my pictures above to determine if yours is the same or not. If it is, it should fit. It is the Generation II that is supposed to be coming out this fall for the Explorer. The Generation II adds the larger intake tube and the heat shielding. I read it in a post that it would be out this fall so I don't have any first hand experience as to whether or not it is true.

My '97 stock air-box doesn't have any polution control devices on it so there is nothing to bypass. If yours is the same way and your MAF hole pattern is the same one from a '97 should bolt right up.

I reread my post and don't see how it looks like I am describing something different than the FIPK that I referred to.

It fit without any modifications . . . If I remember correctly when I ordered it, I though there was a note at the bottom that said something like "for all 4.0L except round cone type factory air-boxes". Since mine was technically a 4.0L and I had the square box I ordered it. It fit like it was made for it so I assume that it was. Maybe K&N never tested it on later versions of the SOHC or maybe Ford changed the MAF sensor shape. . . .

It did fit (in place of my air-box) without modification, there was a note at the bottom of the order page (the round filter box probably has a different mounting plate so the FIPK may not fit properly, it did fit without modification (I guess removing the factory air-box could be considered a modification though, what I meant was that the FIPK required no modifications to fit), and I believe that the reason it doesn't show for a '98 and up is due to not being tested on them since some people here have put it on after they found that their later model intake looked the same as my '97.
