This is for my mom's 2004 Aviator, so obviously its a 4v 4.6l. There is a knock sound coming from the driver's side by the front tire. It occurs at startup and noticeably when you're between 1000-2500rpm's.

I can't identify if it's an exhaust leak, lifter knock, spun bearing, etc.

She's had the car for less then a month and I'm worried because I don't need my mom stranded in a car I suggested she buy.

thx

how many miles? try an oil change

60K miles.

Oil was just changed with full synthetic about 1500 miles ago.

I'm thinking about throwing a bottle of techron in it tomorrow and see if it helps.

It sounds like it could be a loose exhaust piece, because I was at about 4500rpm and I couldn't hear it over the engine noise.

It's going up on the lift tomorrow to check the rear wheel bearings so I'll look for loose exhaust pieces.

at 60K it shouldnt be knocking. its still new imo, getting it up in the air will help

So does the knock vary with RPM's?

She is running premium fuel, minimum 90 octane?

I have 94K on mine and no wierd sounds.

Also, does it feel down on power? There are reports the coil packs going bad and Ford extended the warranty to 100k or 150k, I forget which.

the sound seems to go away at over 2500rpms.

93 octane in the tank.

no loss of power and no other symptoms besides the sound.

it's an exhaust leak. Had one of my mechanics at work look at it. Will be going back to the dealer to fix that and a rear hub bearing (what s shock).

thx again guys!!
