hmmm thats probably not normal..
by reading it i would have thought yoru truck was a first gen...91-94 that is. but wow i would not expect this from a 01..
not normal...but not sure what could be the cause..

Do you have the SOHC engine? If so it could be your cam tensioner. I'm not positive, but I think Ford had a recall out on those.

ya i got the 00m12 recall done. It had a major rough start in the mornings before it, then during the day is had no trouble. Now it starts perfect in the morning.

but now im concerned when it has that knocking sound. It sounds like a toy machine gun. you know what i mean? the sound would start when i gas it kinda hard. and would stop when i let go of the gas. Then when i press the gas softer..it wont make a sound..only when the pedal gets mashed.

i have a first gen, and it does the same thing, knocking during high rpms, and stops when i let off, if anyone has any ideas, i would appreciate the info

i'm having the same problem...i got my timing chain tensor recall done about 3 months ago

Guesses, in order of liklihood:

1) carbon buildup
2) dirty MAF sensor
3) dirty injectors
4) vacuum leak in the intake stream
5) clogged fuel filter

It's probably nothing more than carbon buildup. YES you can have carbon buildup in a 3 year old truck. Depends on your driving style and fuels used.

I'd suggest looking at the "Seafoam" threads, and so forth for detailed information. My guess is you can run a can of Seafoam thru it and you'll be good as new...

I also have a strange knock/rattle on acceleration at about 2500-3000 rpm. its an 02 xlt with a sohc. I'm taking it to my local dealer and gonna see what they say. With my luck it will be about 400,000 to fix. :)

Ya imma definately run some sea foam through her. Cuz i clean my MAF sensor once in awhile just for the heck of it. The seafoam will cleanup the fuel injectors. I got that 00m12 done so the intake its good. and i just got the fuel filter replaced, and damn that thing was filthy, i tell ya. thanx for the thought!! sea foam here i come!

Hi -

I am working on this exact issue right now. I already had 00M12 done which is for the Cam tensioner (twice replaced). Now, I have the rattle/knock on startup and under accelleration until it warms up.

Dealer is trying to F me and say that, yes, there is a recall (don't have the recall # infront of me) for the entire Timing Chain but it doesn't apply to my VIN.

BS!

I have an '00 SOHC.

Anyone out there fight this and get the Stealership to pay?

Hey guys, the (knocking, pinging, rattling, etc), while under acceleration is what is known as preignition, or in layman's terms, the combustion is occuring too rapidly. This is most commonly caused by....de te deeeee....low octane fuel. I'd bet doughnuts to dog treats, that most of you experiencing this problem are using low octane fuel. Simply try two tanks of super, and if this doesn't fix the problem, look elsewhere. So far, at my repair shop, this has worked 100 percent of the time. Why are fords so sensitive about low octane fuel? who knows. I just run super in all of my ford trucks and suv's, nice and quiet under acceleration. I hope this helps. -Dube

Knocking

Just thought I would give you my 2 cents worth since I have not seen anyone mention something that has given me trouble over the years with the Mass Airflow system and Ford. If you have access to a scan tool you could check the Baro sensor reading. If memory serves the reading should be in the 160Hz. area at sea level. Any lower reading will cause the engine to ping. Unfortunately the Baro sensor is not cleanable or adjustable and is replaced as part of the Mass Airflow sensor. Hope you dont need this replaced.

Update:

Just picked up the car from the stealership and here's the skinny.

The '00 SOHC V6 is not part of the service bulletin (01m12 - I think) that covers the lower timing chain casette. However, Ford recognized there is a problem in these later model SOHC motors and has offered to pick up 90% of the tab between themselves and the dealer.

Total bill: ~$1000, my part and a 12K miles warranty = $100. The dealer and Ford really stepped on this one.

Everyone needs to be aware that this could be a HUGE problem if not corrected.

Please do not try to disguise the sounds you are hearing as predetonation.

Email off the list if you have the same problem and need a better explanation of what my dealer is doing for me.

With all due respect when ANY engine has a ping adding premium gas is just a band aid! You need to find out what is making it ping. Sooner or later it WILL hurt your engine if you continue to drive it pinging.

Unless you add a new chip that calls for premium.

Listen to old mechanic...listen to old mechanic.!! :)

You don't want to run higher octane fuel too much if the truck is calibrated to run 87 octane. If the computer is set to burn 87, then run 87. Running 89 or 91 or 93 will only varnish up the heads and O2s, unless your truck is setup to run higher octane.

I also noticed that my x only rattles under acceleration in the morning(of basically when its cold). ONLY under moderate to heavy acceleration. If i drive calm and steady, it doesnt rattle. Im just wondering why it rattles under moderate to heavy acceleration in the morning/cold?

I'll have to report having the same problem with my 99 explorer sport. It only happens when I just start out in the morning then I never hear it again throughout the day. Does this same thing happen with the explorers in the warmer less freezing areas?
