Largest Tire Possible 96' Explorer XLT

I'm looking to put some big tires on my 1996 Ford Explorer XLT. What is the largest possible tire size I can put on if I'm just using the stock suspension?

i have a 99 mounty 5.0 and the specs list that its 15 or 16 capable. anyone know if this is true? thanks

^ Yes, AFAIK the 15" were the stock wheels and the 16" were an upgrade wheel package.

On the stock 15" rim running the stock p235/75r/15's on my '98 XLT 4x with the Trailer Tow package, the largest tire that will fit with no lift, suspension mods, or fender trimming is a 31x10.5x15. That is IF you can find someone to mount them. I have tried all the national tire shops (Pep Boys, NTB, Discount, Big-O, Goodyear...even Sams and Costco) in my area (DFW metroplex) and none with mount the 31's on my '98. Rollover issue and all that. I think I'll have to find an independent that will mount them and then buy them mail order.

I still find that funny, you are adding WIDER tires, wouldn't that improve vehicle stability? lol.

I would mount them myself if I had the equipment and know-how to do it. I guess I could acquire the new tires, take the front rims off, use my wife's Blazer to take them to a place that would mount/balance them, and then reinstall them on the Ex. WAPITA. Probably just as easy to find an independent shop to do it, eh?

^ Depends on how long it takes to find such a garage and what they charge, though you already have some of that time invested in it.

^ No not at all. The greater height more than defeats the width difference.

He might have better luck taking the wheels in off the vehicle, or just mounting them himself then taking them in for balancing.

I see, I didn't even consider the vehicles overall height.
