First of all let me apologize to Ford for all the crap that I have talked about their vehicles over the years. I own a 96 XLT. I purchased it with 75k miles on it. At 83k miles I drove from Rochester, NY to Mesa, AZ to pick up my sister-in-law and back. The truck drove flawlessly both ways. Three months ago a friend offered me $1000 to help him move to Las Vegas. After doing some extensive research about towing with an Explorer I agreed. I installed a tranny cooler, flushed the coolant, changed the tranny fluid and filter (dropped the pan only), and did my usual oil and filter change with Mobil1. Two days later I was on the road with an Explorer with 139k miles towing a 2500# load (O/D off of course). To make a long story short, I made it there and back with the only problem being a flat on my trailer. I mean the temp needle never even went half way up even when I was going through the mountains and over the Hoover Dam, which is a mess due to construction. And best of all, no tranny problems. Well, just thought I would share a positive experience with my fellow Ex owners.
