last step of pulling a4ld having trouble

i've been working on pulling my a4ld out of my 94 explorer for a few days now. everything is disconnected, all the linkage, lines, etc. torque convertor is disconnected and the bellhousing is disconnected from the motor about 3-4 inches slid back.

problem is, that is all i get for play. i can rotate it any which direction and pivot it up and down, but it won't slide out. i thought the exhaust y-pipe might be in the way, and it may still be, but it looks like I can clear the exhaust without disconnecting the y pipe from the manifolds.

i guess the question is for this thread, do i have to disconnect the exhaust y-pip e and catylic convertors? or is there a way around this?

coming from a guy who did this last night, i can tell you there was no way we could get the tranny out with the y pipe in...some say you can, good luck! take that sucker out, soak the nuts that go to the exhaust manifold, its a pain, but it will work in the end. what is happening is the top of your bellhousing is hitting the fire wall, and the bottom of your bellhousing is hitting the y pipe
 






thanks for the quick reply. i'll go out and try that now, hopefully they aren't corroded much. I'm going to have no luck disconnecting the cat convertors from the y pipe though, but as long as the y pipe is loose, the trans looks like it should come out.

i picked up a rebulit a4ld with new torque convertor thats under a year old for $700 CDN. that will go in place of my slipping a4ld with no second gear.

no problem, if they give you too much hell, get a torch and heat them up, they will come out then......you will need one hell of a long extention too. Good luck!
 






it was too tough to disconnect them from the manifold, so i just chopped out a piece of the pipe. Installed transmission, then i'm going to weld it back in.

Hey, i got the coolant lines off, but any good tricks to getting them back in? I had to bend them a bit out of the way while installing, but I can't seem to get them to line up perfect in the fittings, basically not straight enough to thread.

if at first you dont succeed, try try again, just dont get so pissed you cut those too! LOL I wouldnt know, I took out an auto, replaced with a manual, almost done now
 






Pull the hard lines (cooler lines) out of the brackets so they will move easier.. If I remember correctly, there is one bracket that holds the lines togehter along side of the oil pan.. and I think there is a 2nd one farther forward.. Once those are out you can move the lines around more (indipendantly).. Once they are in, you can bend them again to get them back in the brackets.

btw. by bracket, I mean clip.. the lines are clipped together.

ditto what maniak said they can be a bit&^, unhooking the hard lines from the retainer clips and on some trucks even from the radiator is the only way to get them to thread back into the trans, they must line up perfect!
