I have a 92 x with the stock rims, I belive that the newer model rims are slightly larger. I don't have the money to go out and buy a new set of fancy rims, nor do i need them, but i figured i could go to a junk yard or something and find a set of late model rims for a fraction of the price.

The reason i am doing this is because i am going off to school and need new tires, i was gonna get the biggest i could that would fit on my 92 stock. My school is up in the Mts and i figured a few more inches would help out in the snow. Plus i think it would look a lot better

Do i need to get the larger rims? Or can the same size tires fit on my stock rims. WOuld it look better?

One more quick question, My tires are 235/75r15, i know the 235 stands for the tire diameter, and the largest that would fit on a stock X is a 275. But what do the other numbers stand for? Would a 175/70/r15 fit or do they need to be the same size.
Thx alot

First off, I have 4 255/70R16 with a spare that I'd like to sell. They are 2000 XLT rims with General Ameri660's which I got from the recall. They are basically a street tire, but have a tread like the Blizzack. Which means they will be good for winter. The actual size is 30" and your's are 29". Not sure how much you want to spend, but you probably won't find anything cheap or usable at a junkyard. They have gotten wiser and now charge closer to what shops would sell them for if they are in good enough condition. Name a price, I am ready to part with them.

Second, when you get a set of rims, make sure they are a 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern. This means 5 lugs with a 4.5" distance between two lugs farthest from each other. That is the bolt pattern on all explorers. If you get a 15" rim, you'll need a 15" tire and the same for 16".

Also, a 175/70R15 is 24.5" and too small for your application.

jiimi: , My tires are 235/75r15, i know the 235 stands for the tire diameter, and the largest that would fit on a stock X is a 275. But what do the other numbers stand for?

235 doesn't stand for tire diameter. the first number is tire width, in mm. the higher the number, the wider the tire. the next number, in your case 75, means the sidewall is 75% of of the width, or 235mm x .75 = 176.25mm sidewall height. the last number, 16, is your rim size.

i have 275 sized tires on my car and they fit. barely. i get a little rubbing in front, even with a 3/16" spacer. one of the members on this board, tbomb, had 285s on his truck, but had to use 1" spacers on all 4 wheels. not sure if that's something you want to do or not, but i believe he's selling his rims/tires/spacers.

oh, and 175/70/15 is WAAAYY too small... thought you said you wanted to go Bigger??

hey

2001ExSport ,98GreyXLT- Well he obviously made a mistake and ment 275/70/15 instead of 175/70/15.

Jiimi-
I am not sure what size rims you have now. I am guessing 15's. Do you not have much money at all? I have NO idea what a junk yard will charge you for some late model rims. Probley not very much. However you can get some Eagle 119 rims for $100 each at www.wheelsforless.com. With shipping the exact total is 447.20. Thats for 15X8. You're stocks are probley 15X7 so the 15X8's are 1 inch wider. I think these are really nice rims and I'm goin to buy these next week when I go in for my recall tires. (Go to the web sight and click "specials"). They dont make these in 16's. If you like the late model stock wheels and get a good price then go for it. I just dont really like them. You should be able to fit 30X9.50/15" tires on your X now which is a little bigger than the 235/75/15 stocks you have now. Possibly 31X10.50 but might get a little rubbing.(Its a completely different type of measurements). But if you go up to 16's in rims then you must find a 16" tire that will fit. Im not sure what the biggest is.
Just my thoughts!
Might help might not...

In that case, you can get AR rims for $30 a piece.

ar rims

Yea you can get some $30 black ar rims! No these $99 rims look very nice and are very shiny. They dont look like cheap wheels like most $99 wheels do.

Yes i ment 275/70/15, instead of the 175s, . So it seems that i would be better of staying with the stock, 15x7s. Now i think i understand what the #s mean. IF i get a set of 15x8s do the same 275/70/15s fit? or do i need a wider tire. One more quick thing, what do the 31/10.50 stand for? im taking a guess 31 for diameter in inches and 10.5 for the with? thnk you for all the help,

Oh and no i don't have much money. Between dropping 10 grand for school, trying to fix the "shakes" and finding where my overdrive went to i don't have that much money. The only reason i am considering this is because i need new tires anyways. and NO selling my X is not an option. Worst comes to worse ill just take the 10 year school plan :-)

Yes 15X8 will pretty much fit any 15" tire on suvs untill you go to like a 33". 275 is plenty wide. I doubt you will want any wider because any wider can SOMETIMES make it look like a ghetto rig.

Here is a link to a convertion chart that will help you out with comparing the two types of tire measurements.
Its really easy to use. Let me know if you have any more questions.

What do we do with the 4x4 Hubs on those Eagles on the Early X's? Is the center cap removable? Those are tight.
