lcd install?? how?? fuse? etc...

newbie question... did a search and did not find exactly what i needed:

Here goes, i bought a "add a circuit fuse" to add to the fuse box to power my headrest lcd and or dvd player too...

1. do i just pick an empty slot?
2. i bought this thing

how do i connect the red + wire of my lcd to this? i know... probably easy but want to be sure... do i just crimp the wire in there or is there something that connects to this blue connector...

Use the rear window defroster fuse if you can. It's ignition controlled, high capacity, and not used often. Dunno if that will fit in it.

And that is just a normal crimp connector.

Actually, scratch that. I wouldn't use that to power the components, just for a remote turn on. I'd run power directly from the battery.

I suggest you go to a local stereo or alarm installer and just ask if you can watch them for a few hours. And I don't mean Best Buy or Circuit City (or a large chain like that). They often cut corners.

Anyway, you'll learn more by watching and asking a few questions then you will just reading posts.

By running power directly from the battery, I mean just that. You take an inline fused power wire directly from the (+) of the battery, through the firewall, to your components.

What make and model LCD do you have? Can u get a pick of the harness or wires coming out of the LCD? Once i have this i can most likely tell u what to do.

so basically an inexpensive system for the kid and me...

its got a cable that says + for the battery i guess and the other is the ground... the rest of the cables get hooked up to the dvd player and the dvd player comes with a cig lighter adapter which it says i can splice into the connection for a hidden wire install..

basically, i don't know if i can just add a circuit fuse to the fuse box, i think like 33 is empty on my 99 explorer xlt and just hook it up to that and crimp the wire into the blue connector of this: add a circuit fuse

or do what was posted above and just wire it to the battery somehow...
somehow i think i am making this seem harder than it actually is... i wired my own HU and if i remember that had a lot more wires than this one... i am just scared i can blow the circuitry or something if i just plug it in to the fuse box...

Like I said, run a wire from the battery with an inline fuse to the unit. Take the ground wire and run it with a ring terminal end with a short self tapping screw into a lightly sanded part of the floor. then you're done!

Like you said, you're making this much harder than it is.

BTW, there is a factory grommet in the firewall above and behind the brake pedal.

I just installed my DVD system last month, I just tapped into the fuse fore the radio, Works fine, don't have to worry about forgetting to turn it off or anything

Ok, after reading some stuff on the unit it looks like the LCD and DVD player have a power and ground that needs to be hardwired. Then the video and audio get sent with the included wires that simpily get hooked into the dvd player part. Now they say to splice into the cig lighter wiring but that wire has power all the time. So that means to turn off the unit you will have to hit the power button (which will turn into a PITA IMO). I would use 30 amp relay to control this. Just buy a normally closed relay. Then run a fused wire from the batt. to pin 30 on the relay. Then run a wire from pin 87 to the DVD and LCD. Then hook pin 85 to any wire that has +12 volts when the truck is on. Then ground pin 86 and also your DVD and LCD. So now when u turn the truck on the coil in the relay will energize and give you power up to 30 amps (which will be more than enough). This way you will see no wires and everything will look nice, clean and safe.

Now you don't have to do it this way you can just use the cig lighter adaptor included if you find it easier. Now what i said really isn't hard at all once you take a look at a relay. I hope the helps

Thanks for all your help.. Finally tried it out after getting the pieces and was able to visualize how it was going to work.

One question: the ground wire is pretty short and thin/flimsy... To add a little length can i use some of the same wire i used for the power and ground that??

Right now the dvd is running from the cig lighter adapter... so the wire is visible... and the lcd has not been mounted yet... I don't know where or how... haven't found the proper mounts to try it... Will end up mounting overhead and see how bad i mess up the liner.. my uncle repairs those so it should be good...
