Hi,
I have a leak that started today in my 94 Ford Ranger 4.0... When I fill the radiator it leaks out like crazy. I found the source of the leak but don't know what it is called or how to fix it.

It is the hole in the picture below.

I can plug that hole with my finger and after only a few seconds the water stops hitting the road.

Pretty much my question is what is this and how do you fix it. I know it will most likely be a replacement but how hard is that to do?

Any help will be great.

Thank you in advance,
Jon

That looks to be the waterpump. It's not all that difficult to replace, you'll need to pull out the radiator though.
I suggest you go buy a Haynes or Chiltons repair manual for your year Ranger.

Welcome to the forum.

Thank you guys so much for all the help. I will be replacing the water pump this weekend.
Thanks again,
Jon

...and another future Elite Explorer! ;)

Good luck with your repair, the pump isn't too bad to replace...

I finally got it fixed last night. It was a huge pain in the butt. First Autozone sold me the wrong one but it looked the same, in other words I put it all on and hooked everything back up then noticed the hose outlet was a inch and a quarter, not 5/8 like I needed.... after that when I got the right one I put it on and screwed up the gasket without knowing... and had to take it off again. Finally I used some gasket shellac and that held it in place. Now it works great.

Also has anyone that has done this repair noticed that you have to move the AC comp, PS Dir, idler and tensioner pulleys in order to get to 1 screw.

Oh and another problem I ran into was my fan clutch... The fan cover said it was RH threads but it turns out it was LH. Haha. I ended up having to get a new one of those too because half of the threading broke off.

If I had to do this again I could get it done in less than an hour now... But since I ran into so many problems I think it took me a total of 5-6 but now I have a very good understanding of where everything in my engine is.

Thanks again for all your help.
Jon

I've been chasing a coolant leak in my '02 4.0L Ranger this week and have gone through much the same progression (including the mistakes and screw-ups). I will agree that an unintended consequence of doing these PITA jobs is that it's amazing how much you learn about your truck in the process.

I've replaced the thermostat, water pump, lower thermostat housing, etc etc etc and still chasing the leak. After replacing the thermostat and pump I was able to get coolant circulating again, only to find massive fluid "Hemorrages" in other areas. The next fix was replacing the lower thermostat housing (the '02 SOHC models have a plastic housing in front of the intake manifold) and that solved much of the problem, however there is still a significant leak running cooling down the back of the block. From reading others' posts I'm going for the intake manifold replacement tonight...crossing my fingers.

It looks to me like the '02 model only has a single intake manifold gasket "level", not an upper and lower like previous years. Does anyone know if this change eliminated the problem of having coolant leaks through blown-out intake manifold gaskets?
