I've been smelling gas for days now. I just found out where its coming from. It seems to be leaking right behind the frame rail where the fuel lines from the tank (rubber lines) attach to the steel lines. But I can't see it. Anyone else had this problem (94 X)

The steel fuel lines that are part of the pump/sender assembly have some history of rusting and leaking. You might as well install a new pump assembly at this age. A pain to do because of the shields on the tank but it has to be dropped.

I haven't dropped the tank yet. I'll do it tonight. But is the fuel pump/sending unit mounted on top of the tank or the side. my leak looks like its coming from the side behind the frame rail

The fuel pump/sender unit is mounted inside the tank. You'll need a special tool to remove the lines from the tank, you can get one at autozone it is called an air conditioning/fuel line removal tool, comes in a kit with about7 or 8 pieces just use the ones that fit your lines.

After dropping the tank do I need to replace the straps or can I re-use them if they are in decent shape?
I'm dropping the tank this weekend. If I know the gas isn't leaking from the top of the tank, but somewhere along the side where the flexible fuel lines meet the steel lines that run inside the frame rail, what could it be? Is there anything mounted there (sender, etc) I can't see well enough. Or could the only thing thats leaking be the line itself or the connection between the flexible and hard lines?
Thanks for any info you guys could supply.

Did you ever get this fixed? I have the same problem right now, in every detail, how did you do it?
