I just put new rear brakes on my 96 X about 2 months ago, tonight my son drove it to the store and he called and said the left rear brake was locking up. When I replaced the brakes, I made sure I cleaned then greased all metal contact services, the rotors were smooth, not worn. Everything looked great and went together perfectly. The new pads were ceramic pads so theres no sqeak. Any idea what the problem might be? He's not back from the store yet, so I don't know if they're so tight they're smokin', I hope it doesn't cause a fire!! Any help?

...i would pull the wheel and take a look at the pads...also, you may have air in that side that is just showing up...i've had dirty fluid before on brake jobs that didn't get flushed all the way out that caused something similar....good luck and let us know what you find...:D

Thanks tbarsX for the response. My son and I will check it out later this afternoon when he gets off work. I'll post another response once we find the problem and fix it. In the meantime he's driving my 2001 X...I hate to be stranded without a ride...geez.

Not sure how the '01 e-brake is setup but my '97 has a drum brake setup inside the rear rotors for the e-brake. Is it possible this is what is locking up your rotor?

Did you grease those slider pins with the correct grease? The ones under the boots. Do they move freely?

Other problems could be a siezed caliper or problems with the emergency brake.

JoeMaham - I didn't check to see how it was all set up when I replaced the pads, I know I should have but failed to do so. I'm at work at the moment and won't be able to check it out until later this afternoon when my son and I get off work.

96eb96 - all I did was remove the calipers with a c-clamp and replaced the pads. Someone had told me I did need to mess with the slider pins so I didn't grease them at all...should have I done so? If so, what grease should I use. As far as actually finding the problem, I can't until later this afternoon when my son and I get off work.

I'll be sure and post what the problem (s) was.

Thanks for all your help!!

Sorry..."someone told me I did NOT need to mess with the slider pins" so I didn't. I did not remove them.

Ok, just finished with the job, it was the emergency brake pads, they were totally crumbled, pieces fell out all over the place when I took the left rear rotor off.

We just put it all back together, now for a test drive. I'll post again later when we get all the tools and the garge floor cleaned.

Thanks for all you guys help.
