I have a 1997 explorer in need of a new transmisson the truck has 200000 miles on it. Is it worth putting a new tranny in?
The body is in good shape and the other repairs that are needed are very minor.

thanks

Engine life is a direct correlation to the service it received. My Expedition 5.7L has over 250k miles and runs fine. I did not hesitate to rebuild the transmission at 240k miles. At 150k miles on a 4.6L it uses less than 1/2 quart between 10k oil changes of full synthetic which both vehicles always got.

What is your service history?

My 97 sohc had over 260,000 and still ran strong when I pulled it for my 5.0 swap. It did have the noisy chains but I am gonna put a new timing set in it an put it in another tuck. And i had my tranny rebuilt about 28,000 miles ago and when i pulled it I sold it to another member

The only real issue is that it is an SOHC. Usually, the idea of being a direct correlation to service is true, but with that engine, they can still fail if being maintained anyway due to the chains. It's a choice- depending on how tied to the vehicle you are would really determine it... If it was me, no, I probably wouldn't put in a trans unless I could do the work myself and get one for about $300 or so. But, it's not my truck... :)
