I have a 2016 Ford Explorer. The liftgate has gone up over 5 times on its own, without notice. It has caused an accident as I have backed up with it up while parked in the garage. When I took it to the dealership for an estimate, the collision estimator seemed not to believe me....until he went to retrieve the VIN. It suddenly went up in his presence. He was stunned. He actually had the key remote.

Ford had the vehicle for over 8 weeks. The even interviewed the dealership rep and he elaborated that the gate went up completely and unexpectedly on its own. Ford said they could not replicate the situation in engineering / testing.

It is a fleet vehicle. Two of me direct reports have now experienced the same problem. No damage, though in one instance the gate went up during the night and was full of rain in the am.

Mine use to go up on it's own as well. After about 2 years of wondering what the hell was going on I figured it out.....the actuator that releases the rear hatch was pushed loose everytime I opened the rear hatch because a rod has to push to release the lock and guess what...that rod hits the actuator everytime and mine eventually came loose and began acting intermittently. I bet you if you open the inside cover of the rear hatch and look at that door lock actuator you will find your problem. After I replaced it it never did it again.
