I have a 97' Explorer Sport. I want to get it lifted, but I have heard 97' is a difficult year to lift for some odd reason. I want to get 35" swampers, is that posible with a 4" lift?

Well, only if you want to trim your fenders! You might be able to with a big BL. I know Jefe put some 35s on his i think. You might want to check with him. But he did have to trim his fenders, so there ya go. Hope i helped!

Happy trails!!

If you do a 3" bodylift, TT and shackle lift, and some SERIOUS fender trimming you could fit them. However, if you did a 4" suspension and 3" body lift then you could fit them just fine.

Ya gonna wanna get 4.56 gears front and rear so you can move those 35s. Might as well do a rear locker at the same time to save on labor.

HEY SOUPBONE--

What if I got a 3" inch lift with 33" tires, would I kept all the same gears you pointed out? Also, how much would you think those gears and lockers would run me?

aweb9, in order to fit 33's you'll need to do a torsion bar/ shackle lift along with the 3'' body lift. about regearing, it depends on what gears you have now stock. if you have 4.10 or maybe 3.75 gears, you should be ok, but otherwise you will want to upgrade to 4.27 or even 4.56 gears. im not sure how much regearing costs, but i think its kind of a lot like 500-1000 or something, but im not positive on that.

im assuming you have 4wd though. if you have 2wd you have the option to so a 3'' spindle lift too. i think they run about 500-600 bucks. and it lifts your truck suspension wise, not your body. if you have 2wd you could to the 3'' spindle, 2'' torsion/shackle, and 2'' or 3'' body lift and you could fit 35's with that. good luck!

gears cost like $400 for front D35 and rear 8.8 i think. but labor depends on the shop on top of that. you gotta call around in your area. i had 4.10 and 30s stock. should be good for up to 33" tires. for 33s on up 4.56 will do fine and youll have a lotta power. id prolly do that when i have the money and etc......

Dead Link Removed

for lockers the powertrax 8.8 is $430. the arb is $650 + $200 compressor.

im persoannly waiting for the Detroit Electrac 8.8

hope that helps.

whats the deal with these things? everyone wants one!

Its like a truetrac limited slip and a detroit locker in one.... push of a button for full lock up.

Thanks guys, this site and explorations section are incredibly helpful. I'm a newbie at this, but I definately have the desire to turn my explorer into a great off-road vehicle.

couple more questions:

you said my stock gears might be okay: i have the 4.0L V6, 4WD on a 97' Sport. How do i find out what my stock gears are?
