G'day, I have a 2000 model explorer and need to replace the tailgate(thats what we call them in Aust) with a '98 model I have for parts. However I can't for the life of me see how to disconnect the wiring harness from the tailgate to the body. The manuals I have just imply to "disconnect harness at the top of the liftgate" But I cannot see a connector any where? Any suggestions would be helpful

Have you pulled the plastic "inside" panel off of the door? I'm guessing that might be covering things up.

Look at the third photo in the fourth posting, it looks like an electrical connector to me:

Here's another thread talking about the steps to remove the panel:

Good Luck,

Thanks for the input, but that electrical connector is just the one for the high-line brake light. I have searched for a connector, but it would seem that you either have to un-connect the loom from all the components and pull it through at the top, or just cut it and then splice the loom from the replacement tail-gate. Very poor design indeed, I suppose they saved a lot of money by not introducing one connection into the loom at a pivotal point. Again, thanks for your time, intelisevil
