Lifting rwd 96 questions

Can someone please explain to me how adding a leaf lifts the rear? It’s not making sense to me as the leaves are under the axel. I get how shakles or f150 spring would work, but I don’t get this. Thanks!

They add lift by pressing against the spring arch, and making it greater.
