How can you tell if your limited slip axle is working properly on an AWD? I was checking the rear brakes yesterday and with both rear tires off the ground, they spun with little to no effort. I thought that they should be very difficult to turn, since you would have to slip the friction discs in order to rotate the tire. Any ideas?

Isnt the way to check LS is to turn one tire when both are off the ground. If the other tire turns in the same direction you have a LS thats working. If the other tire doesnt spin or spins in the opposite direction there is no LS working. I heard that somewhere but I dont know if it is true or not.

I believe that is only true for a spool, not a LS.

No, that is true for any traction aid when it's engaged.

True True True

but... you dont know how strong the clutch springs and discs are - but you know they are working and you have a LS.

A better test is to jack up ONE wheel, block the rest-trans in N - put a torque wrench on the up wheel- it should take something over 20ft/lbs to start the rotation-. More is better. From my FSM. Smooth rotation no slipping or binding, and the pressure should be even through out the rotation.

Good Luck
