Here is my story...I went out last Friday night and when I returned to my explorer my clutch had no pressure or resistance...it was just hanging there. I knew that it could just be the fluid so I went accross the street to a gas station and asked a guy to put fluid in it. That didn't work so he went into the cab to look at the pedal. He told me that the "clip" had come off my linkage. He temporarily fixed it with pin and rubber band. So today I took it to a mechanic...no...I hadn't driven it since Friday..and he quoted me 807 dollars to fix my clutch...now...correct me if I'm wrong but aren't they two different things...and couldn't I get two clutches for that price?

Welcome to the board!! You'll find all sorts of useful info here.

As for your question $807 for a clutch is ridiculous!!! I'd be looking somewhere else in a hurry. When the tranny died in my '92, they rebuilt the tranny and installed a new clutch/pressure plate/ throwout bearing, slave cylinder for a total of $1600. The bill for the clutch replacement was about $275 of that. (I think the install/removal labor for the tranny wasn't part of that)

If the truck was drivable after the gas station guy fixed the linkage with bubblegum and bailing wire, I would guess that your clutch itself was fine. Sounds like you just broke the linkage. Should be able to repair it yourself for next to nothing. If the clutch slipped, however, or if you had problem changing gears, then your clutch is suspect. However $800 + is waaaaay too much for a clutch. I'd go somewhere else and let them have a look. Or, you can carry extra rubber bands and pins for the next time it breaks.....

Thanks...I talked to the creeps boss and they did it for free.
