1996 Explorer XLT 4.0 OHV 4X4 Auto

Install aux tranny cooler
Install class 3 hitch
Install tow points
Take to body shop and get minor rust on rockers tended to
Replace EGR
And get front end checked out for misalignment

Just bought mine Friday. No sooner than I left the muffler and tailpipe dragged the ground all the way home.
New muffler & tailpipe
clean the gear goop from the auto locking
change the air filter
figure out the check engione light
replace wipers
install sub
I'm a little leary, but I think its a good truck.

Gear indicator permanently points to '1' now. Can be a little confusing at times.

Auto locking

While I was driving the other day it began to smoke from the hub. When I took the tire off there was a ton of dirty gear lube. I suspect that is the reason it was smoking.

2001 XLT w/107,000

Well I should probably remove the tape that i got holdin it together.
-cowls (in the mail)
-3rd brake light (in the mail)
-arm rest cover (sitting on the counter)
-need to see which is cheaper, having someone fix my hail damage (I didn't own it when it happened) or just buy a paint matching hood ($160.00 ish shipped)
-need to figure out why I always have to shut my cargo door twice.
tint the front 2 windows.
-Fishing getting the pin striping off (any hints besides a razor blade [my hands are not the steady])
-Rhino line the roof
-Figure out why my new speaker sounds like crap.
-remove the dent in the rear

But hey! at least i got my hood to open now and got a new drop in K&N so things could be worse!

Thanks Mom and Dad I love you guys :salute: HAHA

I know how you feel about tires. I blew one a few weeks ago and had to buy a new set. I've noticed that my rear brakes are getting down there and I'm set to pick up the Sport in two weeks. My bank account hates me!

ummmm, so far.....

1. brakes
2. shocks
3. console armrest cover
4. shampoo the carpets
5. wash/wax outside
6. rotate tires
7. order new taillight to replace broken one(or get some altezzas....)
8. Flush tranny fluid
9. spark plugs, and clean t-body

thats all i can think of right now

OH NOW on top of all that my power stearing is going out! When I turn the corner all it doe sis shake the stearing wheel out of my hands!

Are you sure it isn't something with the new tires? Try flushing the fluid to see if it helps it for a bit. Mine started to whine and two flushes with Synthetic ATF and all is good with 103k on it.

You just had the front end off the ground from some work done right?

Sounds like the power steering system needs to be bled. Turn the wheels lock to lock a few times, it should bleed out, and your steering return to normal.

Oh yeah, I need a jet engine / chute recovery system and a huge ramp!

The pump is going out and the fluid is black. Wear and tear that all needs fixed. My trucks warranty is up on the 29th that will be 2 years since I bought it. So they should cover it, I will know more in the morning.

'95 XLT w/289K

Terrible creaking from front end, especially when it gets over 105°. Been that way for 120K.

Flush brakes, requires replacing cylinders (fluid is black and clumpy, don't ask).

Resolve EGR codes.

Blower motor started not running when it's over 110°, starts up after a bit. Something overheated...

Left rear axle seal, again and again, only lasts about 30K.

Front diff gaskets, what a pain in the butt. Can I just refill it, please?

New steering wheel, or replace the leather again.

New cruise buttons.

Hood struts.

Rust along the right rear door sill, this one spent 10 years in the Northeast.

Radiator, thermostat, hoses. Temp goes high after accelerating hard, sometimes after starting, comes back to normal...

Cam sync shaft, squeaks when cold, which does happen in Arizona.

Console vinyl, of course.

Driver's lumbar bag deflates, a valve or something.

Driver's leather seat torn on the bolster, finally.

Serpentine belt, of course.

CD Changer needs disc rollers cleaned.

New shocks all around, at least 120K old. Shackles are fine, thank you.

Driver's door lock actuator. What another pain in the butt...

Moonroof rattles when open.

Moonroof shade rattles when open. grrr.....

Refinish headlamp lenses, way bad.

Right front tire is wearing on the inside, probably a tie rod or ball joint. Aw hell, ball joints are easily 160K old.

Other than that, it gets 19.2+MPG regularly, is comfy, and God help me I love it so.

Hm ... truck's in pretty good shape, but still could use some work:

-repair to the driver's power-seat controls (needs a new switch, old one snapped in half.
-front and rear sway bar replacement
- transmission flush / fluid change.

The thread's a bit old, but I'll have go at it:

- new PCV-valve
- leaky exhaust
- replace turn signal lever (coming this week)
- fix some rough patches in the paint around the roof rack
- make a support under the arm rest to prevent it from breaking (again...)
- adding an outside-temperature meter (don't know how yet)
- mud flaps
- new front wiper blades
- ....

BTW: it's an 1998 Explorer XLT 4.0 SOHC (two tone paint, chrome bumpers)

Pull dents from passenger side
Replace both power mirrors
Squeaky front end lubricated

That's about it I think.
