For an really inexpensive locker a spool would be what comes to mind. Peterson 4 wheel and off road says that they are great but do put extra wear on the tires since your axle shafts are always turning at the same speed.

The spool will make your truck almost uncontrolable in snow or ice. It will also cost as much to install as a Detroit. Are you looking for strength, or just low price. The least expensive option will be one of the insertable type such as Detroit's EZ-Locker or Gearless Locker about $270 either way for parts. These are true do-it-yourself installs. You will sacrifice strength since the original carrier is retained. If you have the limited slip rear, you might as well go to a locker with integrated carrier.

A spool is an Off Road only item--accellerated tire wear and parts breakage will resalt if driven on road. Powertrax provides a "self installed" locker for both an open or limited slip 8.8 axle. While LOCKRITE & DETROIT provide them for open diffs only (I believe). I have a Detroit EZ locker in the front of my 93' Sport and plan on adding the Powertrax to the rear ($ permitting). All 3 list for under $300. and can be installed without having to remove/reset the gears.
