Looking for an Explorer. General questions.

New member here, hello all. Not new to forums or fords, I have a mustang. However I am loooking for an explorer for the snow. I like the newer body style which I believe started in 01 however only having $5,000 to spend I am looking more towards the 98-00 range. V6, auto, 4wd, I am just wondering if there are any common problems with these cars or anything specific I should know about them in general or when looking for one? Thanks guys

I would beware of the transmissions. Pretty common for one with high mileage to have been re-built at least once. Fairly common fail point. There's also the "timing chain rattle" on the SOHC engines you should at least be aware of as it could be a death sentence - run a quick search for more info on that. Your best bet might be to gun for a 5.0, as I've heard that they have a much stronger drive train and you won't run into the previously mentioned issues. Otherwise, considering where you live, I would check for bad rust issues, like on the shackles, rocker panels, etc. Seen a few Explorers with issues there.

Jason is correct- you can find a good 5.0 V8 for that, with a much more stout drivetrain. I love my truck and haven't had any real problems with it, (4.0L OHV 220k) but my next truck will be a V8. Same mileage, just about the same money.

Most all gen II's will sag to the drivers side looking at the rear, so don't let that scare you, it's just weak leafs from carrying the majority of the weight on that side for it's lifetime. (gas tank, driver, etc...)

You won't be at all disappointed in a Gen II Ex. The Gen III's started in 2002, and most will say to stay away from the 2002 being a new model with some challenges. That leaves you looking at 2003's and they'll most likely be above your range.
