Posted this in the CO thread but thought id see if we have audio guys not checking locals, Looking for anyone interested in building a custom box for a 03 Sport Trac. Not interested in getting raped by CarToys so thought id see if we have any installers on the board or anyone that knows a guy sort of thing. Im in Denver but can drive it to Fort Collins or Springs if need be. Let me know and thanks for the help in advance!

Some MDF and fiberglass and some shallow mount subs i have done 10's behind the seat.
that was regular subs not shallow. like jl audio 10w0. with the shallow you may be able to get 12's

how much did they quote you? I would say 400-450 is a fair price for how much you need to do.

man cartoys SUCKS!!

they did my wifes old 4 runner, her entire system (shes an audio buff) and they screwed it up so bad!!

Didnt even use the sub pre outs from her deck to the dedicated sub amp, no no they took the output from the other amp instead, so no controlling sub level or frequency from her head unit. Then instead of running a large power wire with junction boxes, for the two amps they ran TWO of their standard amp install kits NEXT TO EACH OTHER... then when one wire wasnt long enough they attempted to splice the 4 gage wire together with solder, looked like a golfball wrapped in tape and stuffed behind a interior panel
Near her fuse holders (two of them now) under the hood there was exposed wires on the BATTERY SIDE (could have burned her truck down)
No baffles in her door speakers, thats right they didnt fill the hold so a 4" speaker in a 6" hole with airspace all around it...

i pulled it all from the 4runner and installed it in her fj....no problems anymore! cost her $$$$ to fix their bs

AMATUERS at least at that Cartoys location (thornton)... for the $$$ I would have been PISSED

i would help with th st box but i dont have space in the garage right now!!!

I haven't gone in for a quote since I know they will ask to much. Im not looking to do the behind the seat option, have something a little bit different in mind that will cost a bit more im sure if I go through them. That's why I'm on the lookout for someone at the moment. Thanks though.

man cartoys SUCKS!!

Ya, the guy I went to for my Jeep did an amazing job and the system is sick as hell. Exactly what I asked for, it just cost a lot more than I think it should have cost. I know I can go through a smaller shop or guy and get it done for a lot less than I know they will ask me. I'm able and willing to help to cut costs. I just dont have any tools or location to cut mdf, nail, all that stuff.

are you planning a center console sub setup? behind the seat? under the seat?

Sport tracs are tough.. but can be done. I was going to put a 10" under the seat and call it done in ours (sold it now) but thats because I need a back seat. If it was my DD (not kid hauler) I would likely put a 10" sub/center console in back

Im looking at doing an 8" (not sure I could fit a 10") W7 center console. Ive seen it done on JL and like the idea, I dont care about the stock center storage at all. This is a DD that I take to the springs so an hour on the road each way I want some bass. I cant stand crap though, I have a 10 W7 in my jeep now in a sealed box and clean was the name of the game and I hate to loose that with the shallow mounts and mini subs people put under the rear seat. Doesn't have that kick. Even with the smaller cabin I still want something with some clean kick.

an 8" could sound fantastic in that center console space :)

you dont like the underseat boxes they make for the ST? they are cheap enough and give 1.5' of sealed airspace I believe?

The MTX Forms im not a fan of, that plastic is so soft and the sub doesnt handle much power to the point its a waste of money IMO. The ebay boxes I see all over can handle an 8" or 10" offering around .5 cubic which isnt bad, but its still such a combined space you cant put a terribly power sub in there, the best is the 8" square solo which can handle around 300 and probably wouldnt be bad. Thats my backup option, Id still rather stick with the quality of a JL with a bigger magnet and get some punch out of the setup which lends to building a custom MDF center console. The guy on JL had a W7 in it and says it sounds great, he even padded it and added a cupholder (I'm pretty much stealing his idea, just trying to find a cheaper than car toys form of doing it.)

I have seen that ST I believe, do you have pics of his setup?

dang I hope you trust your rear passengers!! that should not be too complicated.. do you plan to cover in vinyl/heatgun? or sew a cover? carpet?

Im not going to do it exactly the same, thinking ill make the arm rest taller to use, push the sub back a bit and put a grill and cloth over top to protect it, do it in a tight vinyl or something, why I'm looking for someone who knows what they are doing to give me some suggestions. Try to make it look as stock as I can.

I agree with Cartoys I have heard many horror stories about the one in Ft. Collins. I have seen poor workmanship from them. Theft stories, Etc. Doing a small sealed box would be no problems. Shouldn't cost too much what costs is custom work. biggest expense will be the speaker itself.
