I know it sounds basic, but DIY's are always good! Plus I want to make sure I am not guessing.

there's not much to it. Find the big hunk'o'plug on the drivers side, look towards in the intake and you'll see a vacuum nipple or 2, one goes to the brake booster (obvious) and one goes to the PCV valve. there is another but that goes off towards the front of the engine.

That is a short hose with two 90 degree bends in it and it goes to the valve cover, the PCV valve is on the end of that. It's kind of hidden, but a good light will help you find it.

anyone with a photo of the PCV?

I have changed the PCV in other engines, just not this one. Could the PCV fail and make a pop noise when failed?

The EGR might make a POP if the diaphragm breaks. There is a check ball inside the PCV, and I have never heard one POP before.

Just look at the back end of the drivers side valve cover. There you will find the PCV. Remove the vac line to it, then just pull it up & out of the cover nice & easy like, and replace it. 30 second job at best.

By the way, I love your home town. I used to go there a lot as a kid. My parents bought a few vehicles from the dealership there, my Mother worked there at the local paper for years, and I used to by my music from Record store downtown. Scored my 1st album, Aerosmiths "Dream On" when it came out there. :)
