2004 Mountaineer V8 AWD
I have a 2004 Mounty V8 AWD with 150,000 on the clock. Lately I've been getting the groaning noise while turning that I've read about on here. I guess that means the transfer case is failing:mad:

I want to try and change the transfer case fluid to see if I can get by a little longer. Here are my questions:

  1. What type of fluid does the transfer case take?
  2. How much?
  3. What kind of transmission and transfer case do I have?
  4. Is there a detailed thread (possibly with pictures) showing how to change the transfer case oil?

Thanks in advance!

Eric

1. The transfer case takes Dexron Mercon III ATF or Mercon V. Mercon V is what the transmission takes.

2. It usually takes about 2 qts. I changed mine along with my transmission and bought several quarts. I returned the ones I didn't use.

3. T-case is a Borg Warner 4411(AWD). Transmission is a 5R55S or 5R55W. A Tag on your door will tell you which. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=239360 is the listing.

4. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152869 is how to change the t-case fluid

Thank you so much!
