I am a lucky owner of a 97 explorer xlt 5.0 awd. Had great luck with it. Its unbelievable that is was the #1 vehicle destroyed during cash for clunkers. Still a crap load of them on the road. The 2nd gen explorers are very affordable . $2000 will get you a descent well equipped one here in the midwest. Mine is at 200,000 miles and shows no sign of laying down soon. I disconnected the catback system (the dual cat converters actually put of a throaty rumble that sound pretty cool) also installed a k&n air filter to get the gas mileage and horsepower up. B&M sells a shift kit for around $50 that is just a 2 wire hook up. Couldnt pass that up, and it really works! Comes with a 3 position switch to control the firmness of the shift. Too bad the v8 models come with the transfer case that the v6 has but thats my only complaint.
