I have a 93 explorer 4.0 and want to upgrade the radiator. Anyone know what a good upgrade would be? A friend told me a f150 radiator will fit with a little work??? or after market??? Any ideas???
First question - Do you have an automatic with A/C? If not you can upgrade to a bigger explorer radiator. First thing I would try.
Second question - Why do you need a bigger radiator? If the current one isn't keeping the 4.0 cool, then something probably isn't right in your cooling system. I have never been remotely close to having a lack of cooling in my explorer it's whole life, except when the fan clutch died.
Yes I have auto and ac. Normally i dont have a problem around town but on a extra hot day it heats up when using the ac. also have a problem when pulling a small one motor cycle trailer (which should be no problem). If the fan clutch is tired would that cause the truck to heat up even at freeway speed?
Freeway speed, probably not. Do a radiator flush and make sure the water pump and everything is in good shape. The truck should stay plenty cool if everything is working fine.
If you want an upgrade for a hot climate, you can buy an aftermarket Hayden heavy duty fan clutch that will move more air than the stock clutch.
You can also get a 10 or 11 blade fan if your particular stock fan is the 9 blade.
You're best off keeping the rest of the stock cooling system though, changing parts will just cause issues and won't be the sort of upgrade you might think it would.
Replacing the fan on a vehicle with no issues wouldn't make much sense.
The factory fans are high quality and tend to last a long, long time.
I wouldn't suggest replacing the OEM fan until it develops cracks or is otherwise damaged. The only exception might be when going from a 9 blade fan to a 10 or 11 blade in first/second gens for improved cooling in extremely hot climates.
Thanx everyone for the advice. I replaced the fan clutch and it seems to be doing a little bit better. Now I have to wait for desert season to see how she does.
Are you certain it's the cooling system that's a problem?
I had a '91 with a failing transmission that was terrible for over heating on the highway and when towing. Becasue the tranny cooler is right in front of the rad, there can be a lot of heat soak from the cooler to the rad casuing high engine temps becasue the rad isn't able to cool effectively.
I was kind of wondering about the tranny cooler myself. After the last trip out the tranny started shifting funny. I thought that because I heated up the truck it may have ruined the tranny fluid. I did a fuild change any its back to normal now. How did u fix the problem with urs?
