lost transmission fluid

good on the "bad brakes"... sometimes things happen every where at once. The "switching to AWD" isn't likely a "direct issue" but it will likely cause an increase in torque which will then likely cause slipping which then will likely cause a "flashing light"... :-(

So If that's the case it is pretty much Kaput!

from my "unhappy experience"... yes... :-( my hint about your "rad" was a "good hint".... as from "experienced", the rad may "cause" an increase in fluid in the tranny (a bad mix of water, coolant, and tranny fluid)... this causes issues which you might have seen with the "smoke out" as an overflow (from heating, slipping, and too much fluid). The net result usually is the clutch material is destroyed resulting is a degrading condition until there is little or no movement. That's is just an "internet guess" based on trying to explain your "described experience". Mine was a $2k job as everything had to be cleaned along with replaced clutches, converter, and a couple of solenoid because coolant is pretty "harmful" over time... which you might not have noticed depending on when the last time you checked your tranny levels. Hopefully, I am wrong but I suspect not... :-( On general tranny experience, I have had a friend run a tranny basically dry... stopped moving, checked level, "dust!!!", filled it appropriately and has never had a problem since (his original problem was a leaky cooler tube) so running low might not kill your tranny (might make it work harded / hot which can't be good in the long run) so I think you got something more going on.

I had a Mustang that sucked trans fluid into the engine thru a vacume tube on the trans that was leaking. Burned fluid thru the motor and had white exhaust..

Today's electronically-shifted auto transmissions have NO vacuum connection whatever. Thus, the old days' failed modulator diaphragm, which allowed trans. fluid to be sucked out and burned in the engine, is a thing of the past. Like carburetors. :( imp

Would the code still be there from when the fluid blew out. I've been driving this thing steady, in 4wd on the highway it is working fine.
Can that code be removed and then the vehicle be driven to see if it comes back?

Well, drove it locally for a week. Took it out on the highway, and the first long hill it puked again.
It's now sitting at the wrecking yard while I decide whether to put in another tranny or junk it.
I can get a used tranny cheap, what kind of nighttmares are involved in a tranny swap?

Just off the top of my head......

Drop driveshafts, transfercase, cross member, remover starter to access TC bolts, remove bell housing bolts and drop trans (lines and connectors are a given..)

Now I have never did this but have done a little reading as I have been thinking of removing the trans in my 97 for a rebuild due to the same code. Just crossing my fingers and hoping that swapping in a central valve bodies rebuilt valve body will cure my problem.

Ill see if I can find the link for the 5r55e trans removal for ya. Might take a few, im on my droid.
