:frustrate

OK here goes.....

This is the first message on the this board so please bear with me...

I have a 97 XLT....ALL Stock, no mods.. I would appreciate any help that can be provided for the following problems...

1. Gas mileage is terrible - The tank holds 20 gallons, typical driving is mostly highway. At around 260 - 270 miles into the tank, the check gage comes in indicating I need more fuel. I estimate around 13 - 14 mpg avg.

2. Alot of pinging, it used to only "ping" when engine was cold, know seems to be all the time. Also seems to be lose of power when accelerating. I changed the plugs, wires, and dealer changed the Throttle Body Sensor as part of recall. They also cleaned the injectors, changed the oil. Still didn't work.....

3. When shifting from P or D into R, there seems to be a medium sounding CLUNK. This scares me to think there is something seriously wrong with the transfer case ....

4. This may be related to # 2 ---- The engine seems to seriously LUNGE when outside temp is COLD, almost to the point where the engine has stalled on occasion.

I love the truck, but I am getting more and more frustrated with these issues....

HELP !

Tony

How many miles?? Do you have the 4.0 SOHC engine? IF so, have you had the Lower Manifold O-Rings and the timing chain tenioners replaces under warranty (search 00M12 owner notification)? If not, that could be a cause of your problems. Another frequent cause of pinging is a dirty Mass Airflow Sensor (MAS). Idle problems can also be caused by a dirty or faulty Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) is another item that craps out and causes bad milage and assorted other running problems. Run searches for the above to find more info on how to clean or R&R the above.

Thanks TPLynch

TP,

Thanks for the info.... I have looked at the 00M12 and I am calling the sealer as we speak to arrange an appointment to get it looked at.

I did clean the MAF, and it seamed to help the pickup a little even though the MAF did not look that dirty.

I'll let you know what comes out of the 00M12 issue.

Thanks Again !!

TJA
