Mystery to me. Been driving my 98 for a few weeks now and it still puzzles me. There is this loud banging like noise coming from under the truck at acceleration right from the start. You can virtually feel it inside the truck like something mechanical is loose under there. When truck goes over 2000 rpm's it goes away and acceleration continues without any problems. It was pretty hard on the road trying to pass other cars or climbing steep and long hills. At some moments I even though that I might not be able to make it to the top of the hill (mountains). I felt like something is gonna get loose and fall apart on me. What's worse the noise just went away today - it stopped during my trip back home (about 600 km) and now my beast accelerates just fine without any hesitation or noises.

I suspected a bad u-joint on the drive shaft or chewed-up carrier... or something going bad with the transfer case... but now it stopped so that might not be the case. If something was loose it would now just fix itself like that... right? Could it be that something bad is going on within the transmission? Could there be such a loud banging - mechanical like noise coming from the tranny? I'd like to start looking at every possible place under there so where should I start? Did anyone have same kind of problem with their truck???

thanks,

Mine did the same thing under hard acceleration. It ended up being the transfer case.

Can you give a bit more input? did you just replace the transfer case or had it fixed?

Replaced the TC with a used one I bought from a member on here.

Time to get under there and see what the problem is.

Thanks,

Had a bang when driving off and when truck shifted from left to right and turned out to be broken sway bar link. It was in the rear and sounded and felt like it came out from right where my feet or tranny was.

Good Luck in finding problem

Lemme give you a better explanation. If I was at a complete stop and took off hard I would get a REALLY loud BANG!!! Sometimes two or three. It felt like something was going to fall out from under the truck. It only did it under hard acceleration though and just got worse and worse. I really think either the chain was slipping or the centrifugal clutch was slipping inside the transfer case. Anyway, I greased the rear drive shaft slip yoke, replaced the front drive shaft thinking it was the drive shaft CV joint and replaced the front drive shaft u joint but in the end it ended up being the TC. You could check out that slip yoke on the rear shaft. If it's dry you could be getting noise from there. All it takes is your time and some grease. Hope ya figure it out. Good luck.

no, that's OK... seems like I need to start looking for a good used TC... it sounds pretty bad (yeah, it's back again) and it also slips... sounds to me like a tc also - chain? jerking, slipping and that loud bang? I think chain needs to be looked over.

thanks,

What is the "slip yoke on the rear shaft?"
