my x had sat for a week and this morning i was driving it to work and all the sudden this loud groaning sound started. I was listening to music and thought it was a siren or something but after i turned down the music i realized it was coming from the front end of the drivetrain. The noise increased with speed of the wheels. I pulled over into a parking lot and parked. Decided Id try to make it home since i had only gone a couple blocks. The noise did not occur on the ride back. Just trying to figure out the problem so that i can fix my x cause i don't feel safe driving it until i figure out where the noise came from.

did you notice anything else wrong? bad acceleration ? truck pulling to one side etc...ANYTHING AT ALL? just a loud groan may not narrow it down...

no it was running pretty strong. Just a really loud groan comming from the drive train definetly not the engine it sounded like the front diff or the tranny maybe i dunno could only here it when i was moving so its tough to say exactly where it was coming from

is it a 4x4 w/ auto hubs ? Perhaps a hub is trying to lock/unlock ?

Also, I'd jack the front upon the side the noise came from and check the wheel for play? Perhaps a wheel bearing is going ?

It's hard to tell with only a noise :(

I would def have the whell bearings checked out...My '95 groaned (I'd consider a loud hum) like hell---especially when I steered to the right (the left bearing assy was worse the the right) and the weight of the vehicle shifted to the left side. After having both sides changed out for new assy's, it was nice and quiet.

Yeah, check your bearings. They whine louder the faster you go if they're bad.

Im thinking its the hubs because I took it out for a spin today ( 1st time since the inciddent) and everything seems fine. Anything is possible though. I had the bearings replaced about 1 year and a half ago but if its not done right things can go bad
