Ok, here goes. I placed a new KKM intake system on my 96 xlt and now at idling speeds and low rpms I have this tremendously loud hollow blowing or sucking noise like it is getting too much air or not enough. During the times I am letting it warm up it sometimes does it and it causes the motor to shut off, I usually push on the gas when it does it when I am driving and it goes away. I haven't let it go far enough when driving at slow speeds to see if it would shut off while moving. This is becoming more and more frequent under both circumstances.

Also I did not put the stock screen back in from the original intake. Would that make a difference? And is it possible that with the extremely low temps (in the 20's) it would cause a problem?

Thanks
Mark

When you remove the stock airbox, and replace it with the kkm, you also remove the built-in noise baffles in the intake system, You are hearing the air being sucked passed the throttle plate. It is normal and there is nothing you can really change with a after market intake installed.

first unplug your neg battery terminal for 10 mins to reset the comp. Then clean you IAC. If you need directions do a search

I did an experiment myself, I just put on a cone filter instead of the air box. Yes you will get a loud noise, which is what some people want and it sounds sporty when you floor it. My air box has a temp sensor in there that tells the engine it is very cold out so wh en I go to start it, it runs a little more fuel. I put the cone filter on and had to bypass this, and thereby had some trouble starting it on COLD MORNINGS. And it did idle faster because of the larger amount of air. I have since replaced my original setup for convenience. I may later, and the best thing probably to do is just get a k & N type filter that fits where the OEM one goes.

noise

The regular noises are fine, but this one is constant until I hit the throttle, then it stops. It sounds kind of like when you put your hand over the end of a vacuum cleaner, only 50 times louder. Then it just shuts the engine off if the truck is sitting still. Is it possible there is something wrong with throttle body or intake itself. And if so what can I do to check?

Thanks

get a new Idle Air Control for it or clean it. This is what causes the humming 99% of the time. Do a SEARCH

noise

Thanks. I'll give it a shot.

Hey Mark...I have the same VERY loud humm going on with my airbox. Did you find a solution?

I don't know if the 96 is the same--but my 92 had a vacuum tree with a bunch of hoses attached but one fell off the back. It made the sound you describe--very loud. It was very hard to see---found it by spraying starting fluid near the hose connections until I noticed a change in revs.
