went wheeling today for a little bit till i heard a loud poping noise coming from either my front diff. axles or drive shaft.

it only happens when im going up a hill (rocks, mud, anything) is when it pops not just once.... like pop pop pop (when im on the gas) lay off the gas it stops... sounds to me like somthing is slipping...

i kind of already know that my pinion bearing in my front diff is going out, i already have the stuff to rebuild my front diff. but i kind of want to hold out on that till i do a swap which im collecting parts for now...

any advice on what it could be would be much appreciated. thanks!

Im not very mechanically inclind these days. Yea Im sure something in the drivetrain is starting to go. I know if your cv's are going they make a clicking or poping but I dont know if itll only do it on the gas.

Not to get off subject, I noticed you have your lights mounted on top your bumper. Did you pull the bumper off to mount them?

My truck used to make popping under similar situations, and my problem was the Torque On Demand clutch in the t case.

Brooks - yeah, that came to mind today actually. i know its not my cv's ive replaced those 3 times on the driver and 2 times on the pass side... so i know what that sounds/feels like :( ... i dont think im gonna mess with it till i do my swap...

Jester - i actually no longer have that front bumper on my truck. i made a bumper but the brackets i made were.nt strong enough... I got stuck in this HUGE mud pit and hooked to it and pulled it right off... tossed it and decided to start all over. but to answer your question, no i didnt take the bumper off... i just drilled through the bottom of it took a long extention and a 9/16 socket i belive to tighten the light mounts...( pain in the ass way )...

i get that sound i think your referring too. my truck does that too, along with another guys truck...also a ranger that went wheelin with me awhile back, and that truck had 3000 miles on it. i think the sound your hearing is normal. but thats my opinion, it could be something sbout to give but on my truck and the other two trucks they have the smae sound as me, so likle i said i guess its normal

Thanks for the info Jim. I mounted mine to the front of the bumper & they bounce all to hell, that way was still a pain in the ass. lol

yeah, that may be the sound im hearing now that i think about it. but i dont think its normal, just doesnt sound normal. but like i said. no more wheelin till i do my swap... i can wait a few months. i think haha....

My tcase did the same thing under high torque conditions - up hills, towing boat, etc. Swapped it out, problem solved. Mine is AWD though.
