I have an intermittant but very loud pounding noise when the vehicle is in motion. The transmission seems to be shifting fine. I have replaced both front and rear wheel bearings. I disconnected the front short shaft. The noise is still there. The whole car shudders when the noise happens. Anyone have any thoughts on where to go next?

Does this "pounding" noise present itself only when doing a certain movement?
Do you hear it coming from the front, or the back, or you just can't tell?

The noise happens in any configuration, straight, turning left or right and backing up. It seems to be coming from the center to the rear of the vehicle. I will admit that I have not removed the rear drive shaft because I would have expected a drive shaft or U joint problem to present itself as a constant rumble not the intermittant banging. I'll drop the shaft today and see if I find anything.

Drive shaft is just fine. U joints are all tight. Could this possibly be a transfer case issue???

Yes, it could be a transfercase issue. I was thinking more along the lines of the problem being in the rear differential. Noises will travel along the drivetrain and are difficult to pinpoint exactly where they originate. Can you get this truck on a lift (or up on 4 Jackstands) and try to recreate the noise?

What is your axle code? Its on a sticker on the drivers door. The point I am getting at with that question is, the limited slip differentials make some weird noises, shuddering, moaning/groaning type things when the clutches go bad. I wouldn't exactly say that the noise generated would be a "banging" noise though.

Have you been inside the rear differential recently? (you said in the first post that you had replaced the front and rear wheel bearings, that would indicate that you have)
When you opened up the rear differential to remove the axles to facilitate the bearing replacement, did you replace the cross-pin keeper bolt? Those are notoriously weak and break, that condition would cause some strange noises as well since it would allow irregular movement of the spider gears.

GO PATRIOTS!

i had the same thing when i was driving a tractor trailer. started as a whine and then a loud, banging, shuddering. turned out one of the diff gears broke and was missing a tooth on the ring gear. hope thats not your problem but it is a possibility.
