Loud whine & Loud Suck

I have two problems.

At random times when I start my Explorer there is this really high pitch whine. It seems to be coming from the altenator or from the block. When an altenator goes out does it cause a whine? Any other problems?

Also at all times I have a really loud hum coming from the air box. Brand new filter but still the really loud hum continues.

Any suggestions on either problem?

serpentine belt? that would be my first guess and is probably the cheapest to replace

The belt! I bet that is it, never replaced it and had the Ex 5 years now.

Can't believe I didn't realize that!

yeah better to replace it than have it break had to push my explorer once in the middle of DC traffic cauz of that - hehe.
