First off just want to say I'm new to the board and have a question to ask all of you other Explorer owners with Automatic trans. a question. I was driving my 98XLT with Auto tran. the other day, when all of a sudden I heard a loud whine start when I let off the gas pedal - it sounded like slipping gears. It only happens when you let off the gas and start to slow down (i.e. it happens when you brake). If I brake and let the trans. shift down while keeping my foot slightly on the gas it does'nt do it as often. A few weeks ago I noticed a loud clunking when it was shifted in gear in the mornings, then the other day in the parking lot at a supermarket it made the whine when put in reverse. My nieces husband works for a ford garage and took a quick look at it and said it sounded like the 4WD Module may be trying to engage 4WD Lo when the vehicle is in motion- and that a lot of Explorers have had similar problems. My X has 106,000 miles and the trans. fluid level is normal the fluid is a little dark and needs to be changed but I dont think that would cause these problems. I still have great acceleration and gears shift as normal.....Any ideas?

I would atleast change the fluid and filter and go from there

Does this sound like your problem?
