Ok i changed the passenger one no problem. but "bad" one of the two the drivers side refused to come out. i am getting ready to pull the whole d@mn lower arm off and put it in a press... before i do questions :

1. should i take a torch to it.. its thin metal down there and i dont want to make it brittle

2. yes i tried a "rental" tool that didn't work at all its stuck really really good like

or should i just say screw it and pull the lower a-arm and dont it like that..

fyi i am mechnicly inclined but this is kicking the butt, passgener side = easy drivers side = high blood pressure and a need to throw tools

i am leave to head to lousianna (in the army) real soon so i need to get this done so the wife can drive it

and yes i messed up the ball joint enough where the snap ring will not go back in

did you use the right tool to remove the joint? basically a ball joint press looks like a giant C-clamp. If you did, did you use the proper "cups" (or metal cylinders really) to support the A-arm underneath?

some people have also gotten lucky and used a BFH to drive the joint out :hammer:

You'll need to remove the snap ring that hold the ball joint down. Once you removed the snap ring, it should just drop.

Thanks for serving our country, Z.

ok it looks like its going to the shop. i got time to pack and thats about it. sucks.. i was gonna remove the lower a-arm use heat on it along with the tool but oh well and a BFH wasn't enough this time. cant win them all.

I had a helluva time with mine... I sprayed some Deep Creep on it, let it soak while I did the other side, then beat it somemore with a BFH and finally got mine loose. And yeah, that balljoint press can be a PITA... the one I have (I assume they're all the same?) isn't deep enough, and it was a pain to get it onto the bj.. plus the half-shaft being in the way didn't help (couldn't seem to remove it from the knuckle)

ok i got it changed.. the shop couldn't get it.. tools used :

torch
ball joint press
6 foot breaker bar and 6 foot pipe on it..

time : 2.5 hours..
effort : sweating like a pig

i had to heat it use a press and still had to use a bfg hammer on it.. and it took work. but i got it.. truck drives like a dream with one tire with no weights or sand in it (forgotto put sand in the spare and i rotated it on today)

thats a helluva lot of torque to get a joint out, i think i used a 2 ft breaker bar hooked up to the joint press - nothing more. so u mean that u had about a 10 ft. arm on that press? the 2000 XLS' musta came with welded in joints ;)

well since u ask, sure! well basically it goes like this ok, gather around children, its story time.. ok so here goes.. so i wake up like at 5:45 in the morning right, go to school or work (depending on which day it is).. and when i get home, its time to get back under the explorer, or in the explorer, or somewhere relativvvvvvvvely close to the explorer.. probably within like 3 feet of the explorer, sometimes even 4ft.. in order to fix something.. thats just how it goes.

oh and do pardon us zhanx for hijacking ur thread... i owe u at LEAST one tall glass of lemonade
