Lurching after going into R?

First thing in the morning my 2003 Explorer shifts into R no problem, but as I roll backwards down the driveway, it slows almost to a stop then suddenly releases with a big thunk and continues to roll. It's almost like a brake is sticking then letting loose but I don't apply the brakes and the parking brake is not set. I have no issues with the brakes while driving. This doesn't happen any other time except in the morning when it's cold.

Any ideas? I've searched for other people having the same symptom but it always seems to be an issue with hard shifting into R which is not the problem here.

Thanks

You possible have a one way sprag going bad.
Do you notice any other problems?
Are the brake pads and the wheel bearing good?

The only other thing I have noticed is a slight tugging to the right when accelerating and letting off the brake moving forward. I know the tires need replacing but not sure if that would cause the tugging or not.
