Thought i would see if any one could help me out. My explorer is a 93 ford explorer with manual M50D transmission. Last year i had a new clutch and slave cylinder put in. Ever since then it seems like my 1 to 2 shift isnt right. The best i can describe it is like the clutch doesnt disengaged right away and i cant shift it in unless i give it a pause. It also makes a clank noise or something if you do it to fast and try to force it into 1. It will go in just hard. All other gears are fine. Any ideas on what this could possibly be?? I heard some one once say something about gyros beening off but i have no clue. Any help is appreciated

Could be syncros or shift fork, but the slave cylinder is usually the culprit. I know you said all other gears are fine, but do you ever have a hard time getting it into reverse?

If not, then I suspect internal transmission problems like I said above.

Wassau Wisco... Is there a ski resort near you? I used to live in Northern Ill, and skied at a few places in Wisconsin.

I have never had any problems getting it into reverse. The slave cylinder is brand new in it. Hhmm sounds somewhat difficult if i would need to tear into the tranny. I guess i dont consider it a ski resort but we do have Rib Mountain now Granite Peak. I guess its just a big hill and it does draw enough people to our community in winter time. Thanks for the input.

I'd say it's the slave. I replaced the clutch & slave in mine 50,000 miles ago, and the 1st-2nd shift thing developed recently, which tells me it's time to drop the tranny again and new slave cyl time. The exact same thing happened before, which forced the previous replacement. The slaves just go bad, either a bad design or they just wear out. If you had a shop do the work, perhaps they used lower quality parts and the slave has gone bad sooner than they usually do. Perhaps theres a warranty on the labor? I'll be using a OEM Motorcraft one this time, as they're said to last longer. If the 1-2 shift pause is the only prob, you might leave it alone if you can live with it. I've driven it like that for months now and it hasn't gotten any worse other than a few embarassing moments at stoplights where it won't go into any gear for a bit. When it gets harder to shift or 2nd gets harder and harder to shift, get a new slave, pronto.

I had the same problem when I had my clutch replaced once. My problem was that a shim wasn't put in when they did the job. I had another clutch job after about 45k...which wasn't the norm for my truck. Next time, the shim was put in properly and it was smooth, beautiful shifting. My $02.
