I think I ruined my MAF sensors or at least made them extremely inefficient. I have two options to buy another stock ford unit for $187 with core charge or upgrade to an aftermarket if they make them.

The sensors have oil on them from my K&N filter, (Dummy) I oiled the top of the filter as well. I sprayed them with electronics cleaner but it did not work, some have suggested using Q-tips and alcohol but others say not to directly touch these sensors.

Any suggestions??

You can get a maf at autozone for I believe around a hun.
If your way overoiled maybe you just keep contaminating the Maf, if a cone filter stuff newspaper in it to wick out as much oil as you can, clean the maf again and see if that works, good luck.

Thanks after I realized what the problem could be I washed the K&N filter and re-oiled it. I then cleaned the sensors with electronics cleaner three times. It was a bit better but still has issues. I wonder if an aftermarket MAF is available?

For an OEM type Maf ck autozone online, 99 bux plus core

Is that a decent piece or should I stick with a ford unit?

Would go oEM ford if it was me and the bux are not an issue, I run a pro-m, keep my OEM for smog insp time.
Just wonder for sure if your MAF is bad, keep them clean they are pretty reliable long term,Good luck

well I don't know what else it could be I replaced and tuned up all other ignition parts. I am getting like 10mpg under hard throttle on hot days so for $187 it would be worth it I guess.

I seriously doubt it's your MAF. Clean the K&N real good and LIGHTLY spray it with oil, thats all it needs.

Now take your MAF off and get a Q tip and GENTLY clean both of the hot wires. You can't hurt them if your careful. It's a simple procedure and won't hurt a thing.

And if your getting only 10mpg under hard throttle then drive it easier!! common sense applies here :)

Have you done everything else in the tuneup dept. to ensure your truck is running at optimum? New plugs, new wires, NEW 02 Sensors (big cause of bad mpg).

I have never done the O2 sensor, but won't a check engine light come on if thats a problem? I know the MAF needs to be cleaned as you can see brown carbon or dirt on the filaments.

I hear lots of opinions but what is the truth, can a MAF be swabed with a Q-tip and Alcohol or will it get damaged?

I have cleaned the MAF's on everything I own with a Q tip and alcohol without a single ill side effect. If your carefull it will not hurt a thing, trust me!

Oh, and the 02's have to almost completely shot in order for them to trip the MIL. When they get old, the switching gets slow in them and they usually always end up making your engine run richer than it should. The only way to test them is with a lab scope to watch the switching pattern and even that isn't totally accurate. At $40 they are just easier to replace.
