Well I just got the X back from the garage and the fuel leak is all fixed, maintenance done so now I'm a little mod hungry. Unfortunately also low on funds. I have read through a lot of stuff but still have a few questions about the MAF options.

Which out of this list would give the best result on a stock truck?

70mm Cobra MAF (89-93)
73mm Vortech
73mm C&L Race w/ stock Mustang sensor (good / used - 19lb calibration, 86-93)

I know a MAF isn't quite the first thing I should add but I may have the opportunity to get the 73mm C&L for fairly cheap, and there is a time limit on availibility.

Will the 73mm C&L for a Mustang work with a '92 Exploder (maybe with a sensor change)? Anybody gain anything on a stock truck with just the MAF upgraded, and if so, which one did you use?

Any other input would be useful to me, and if all else fails, point me to thread were this has been discussed before (as I haven't really found one). :D

how much you spend'n on this ?

This has been discussed several times... can't remember which thread though. A search usually helps.

However, in one of the threads there were some very interesting articles on MAFs and which ones are good to use... I don't remember exactly how it works, but IIRC the size of the sensor is proportional to the size of the housing... the computer figures out the airflow from that. Because the housing is supposed to be a certain size, the computer is set for a certain air/fuel ratio... that works for everything up to WOT. At WOT, the computer "knows" how much air is supposed to be getting to the engine, and adjusts the fuel accordingly.

When you replace the MAF, you can change the ratio between the sensor and the housing. If you use the 89-93 (not sure on the end year) Mustang 5.0 GT MAF, the ratios are essentially the same, so you get more power without any real drawbacks. I'm not sure if you have to use the stock Explorer internals though.. However, if you go aftermarket, the sensors are designed to "fool" the computer into thinking it's getting a different airflow than it really is... this can cause problems at WOT...

I don't remember everything, but I think that's the gist of it... I'll try to track down the thread somewhere. But, stick with an 89-93 Mustang 5.0 GT MAF... it should be cheaper, and it's a bolt-on mod...

anything is better then stock IMO. I used the MAF out of a 5.0 explorer. i assume it is the same as the mustang, it is a lot bigger then stock. I got it for $5 from a U-pull junk yard.

I was initially thinking the the 70mm Mustang because it seems like everyone has had good luck with it, it's a bolt on, and it's way better then stock. I guess what I was really asking was should I pass on the experimental and stick with the tried and true. I'm going to go with the 70mm Mustang MAF. By the way, if anyone is interested, here's the link for the 73mm C&L:

Maybe somebody can put it to use. :D

Thanks guys.

What do you expect to gain by doing this on an OHV?

I expect to gain 100 HP! :D

Seriously, not much of anything. I've ridden in both the OHV equipped exploders and also the SOHC. Makes me wish I had the SOHC, as the OHV is a dog, but they didn't put them in Gen 1s. Soooo...

I figure if I start opening the intake up, it might run a little better. I believe the specs on the stock X are 55mm MAF and 58mm TB?

Before you tell me I'm an idiot  , I do know that just a MAF will give me squat alone. My plan is to mod the air box, open up the MAF bottleneck, and then do some other things such as the TPS adjustment; it should run better. It doesn't run badly now as it is a new engine, and I don't expect it to do anything enormous as far as power, but it might gain a little mileage. Also, I'm planing on getting a 66mm TB and exhaust sometime in the summer, so I'll be needing all this anyway.

I've known this truck a little while, a friend had it before me, and driving conservatively he got about 15 MPG. Thats about what my Dad's 1970 Pontiac LeMans gets and thats a station wagon with a 350. I know it can do better.

look up throttle cable mod. this will give you a little more throttle responce.
