I have had a problem with my valves pinging in my 93 Explorer for a few months now I tried changing the plugs and the fuel filter and that didn't help.
So, I decided to take it to my local Ford dealer and have them run a diagnostic test on it. They ran the test and told me that my MAF sensor was bad.
Thinking that I would be rid of the ping for good. I got a NEW sensor..
Well that was a waste of time and a couple hundred bucks.
Any sure ideas on how to fix this problem instead of blowing more money on a no fix solution.

Are you talking about "spark knock" when you accelerate? If so, you may need to use something like Sea Foam to clean out the carbon deposits in the cylinders.

The pinging occurs around 2000 to 3000 rpm going up hills, mountains and accelerating on the highway.

Just listed a thread in relation to this. Try running sea foam through your engine. As for me I had the dealership clean out my intake and fuel system and replace the faulty MAF. My ping is no longer. also others had a few suggestions as well.

try cleaning the maf and running seafoam before throwing parts at it

After changing the MAF sensor, did you disconnect the battery for 5 mins to reset the computer?
You might also want to retorque the lower intake manifold. It is a very common problem on Gen 1's, especially around #5 cylinder.

Yes, I let the negitive battery terminal of for at least 20 min.

What OCTANE gas are you running?

I tried 92 octane and still a slight ping. I noticed that since my pinging started my oil consumption has increased by a quart between oil changes. Did a little searching and found out that maybe these two things go together when the lower intake manifold bolts are loose. What do you think?

it is worth a shot it does not cost anything. i still reccomend seafoam

I’m posting again after trying the sea foam and checking the lower intake manifold bolts.
I still have the ping... I went to my local auto parts store and picked up a knock sensor to try it.
Well needless to say, I took it to a garage and they told me that it does not have one.
Is this true? Why would the auto store sell the part? It’s a 93 explorer sport 4x4.

Would it be worth getting the EGR valve checked out. If not, what else should I be looking for?
Please help.

The SOHC 4.0 engine has a knock sensor but our Gen 1 OHV 4.0 does not.

After re-reading this post I noticed you mentioned changing the plugs, did you also replace the wires? Other than getting your EGR valve tested I can't think of anything else at this time, wish I could help more.

Bashman., Yes I also changed the plug wires. I'm going to have the EGR valve tested this week. I'll let you all know how I made out.

You did not mention how many miles your X has on it. If it is anything over 75,000 change your plug wires. My Navajo was idling horrible, changed plugs and wires at 80,000 miles and OMG...what a difference, great acceleration and idle. I also had a slight ping and that too was fixed. I would clean the MAF with electronic cleaner and let it dry well before you put it back in. Also see if your EGR valve is dirty. You might also have dirty injectors. Also have you changed your air cleaner lately?

I have just gone through the same troubles with mine.I replaced plugs, wires MAS, and it still pinged badly.I tried Seafoam, and it helped, but did not rid me of the problem.I was then told that the EGR valve and the Differential Pressure Sensor( which I belive relays the EGR cycles to the computer) are often dirrectly responsible for ping.I manually checked the EGR by putting vacume to it and inserting a feeler guage to see if it was opening freely, and found that it was only opening part way.I replaced the EGR,and the DP sensor and it runs better than ever with no ping at all.Perhaps you may be experiencing a similar problem.

the differential pressure sensor lets the computer know how much the egr is open but does not have a bearing on hole the vehicle will run fine. if it is bad it will only turn on the check engine light.
