hi all, whilst putting some petrol in the other day i heard a splashing sound, yup sure enough i'd put about a tenner on the forcourt :rolleyes: the filler neck had corroded through and snapped, just above the rubber hose to the fuel tank. oredered one off justin and today set about the 'easy' replacement. it was obvious once i'd started the job that the vent pipe had been broken through for some while, and the main filler tube had been partialy broken for sometime also. probably explaining the smell of petrol and the poor mpg on petrol. losing it filling up and evaporation. i must say i was shocked at the amount and expanse of corrosion. the metal sections of the pipes was bad, but also the filler opening where it bolts to the body is also heavily corroded, so much so that there is now only 1 bolt securing it not 3.
i urge everyone to check theirs at their earliest conveniance, and look toward rust inhibitor treatment to all the area, pipes and aperture.

now the strange occurance, my rough idle problems have been widely discusse on here, but today after replacing the filler neck, they have somewhat diminished. not gone completely but a little better. this shocked me as i didnt theink the ex had a vaccuum system or pressurised tank.
no doubt someone will enlighten me.

now go and check ya filler, it'll be worth it ;)

mick :D

Not sure about whether the system is pressurised but water may have been getting in the tank!

Maybe try super unleaded and see if this cures the misfire.
If it doesn't i'd change upper and lower intake gaskets.

gonna be changing gaskets when justin gets some oom12 kits in a week or 2.

i meant tips on water in the fuel mate :thumbsup:

fule tank

the filler neck corosion is a comon fault i see it all the time most times there is a lot of rust and water in the tank the only way to get it out is to remove the tank as they dont have a drain plug.

I had the same thing except my tank was 3/4 filled with mud and sludge as I had been offroading and jet washed my wheel archers. Problem I have got is how do you get the fuel filter off is there a special tool or something?

i had a problem with my filler cap it went us could not find a replcement apart from fords who wanted £47 plus vat for one,so i went to a scrap yard and took of a filler pipe from a escort.it fitted with no problems at all now i can use the us style screw cap.

I've not looked at the access at the connection to see if its the same as the fuel line connectors to the engine but if it is;
You can get a nozzle from a silicon tube and cut it at the right pipe width and then down the length so you can slot it onto the pipe. Worked a treat for me.
